WINGER Peter Betham says the Waratahs would “ruin” all of their pre-season planning if they decided to go into their shells and play a more conservative style against the Sharks.
The Tahs face their toughest test of the season against the table-topping side in Durban and want to continue their ball-in-hand approach despite the lack of success teams have had in South Africa using that tactic.
“If we’re not playing the same way, we’re going against the value of everything we’ve built in the last two seasons,” Betham said.
“Going away from that would ruin everything we’ve worked on.
“It is definitely going to be a mental battle.”
But Betham, the sole survivor of the back three from their last game after Israel Folau was ruled out through injury and Alofa Alfoa replaced on the wing by Rob Horne, is confident the Tahs can deliver a rare win in Durban.
“I believe we can definitely perform the way we have been,” he said.
“This game will be won between the 60th and 80th minutes so that’s when we’re really going to have to step up.
“It’s definitely a test of character for the team and self-belief in our game plan.”
