Crows stars try their hand at cricket

Some of the world’s most exciting Twenty20 cricketers will line up alongside Adelaide and Port Adelaide footballers on Sunday for the special Bushfire T20 Showdown.

Names like Rashid Khan and Travis Head will play cricket in Crows and Port colours alongside the likes of Taylor Walker and Tom Jonas to raise money for the SA Bushfire Appeal.

The cricketers were added to the previously announced Crows and Power teams for Sunday’s Bushfire T20 Showdown via a special draft held at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday afternoon.

Draft day is nerve-racking for anyone, and having been on the receiving end of it themselves, the tables turned for AFL footballers Tom Lynch and Hamish Hartlett.

The duo pored over the batting statistics and skin folds results of 22 cricketers before drafting some of the sport’s biggest names into the remaining spots on their Adelaide and Port Adelaide teams.

Crows forward Lynch – also the team’s T20 captain – won “rock, paper, scissors” (he went scissors, beating Hartlett’s paper), and with his first pick selected Strikers WBBL batter, Bridget Patterson.

He went on to pick up Alex Carey, Rashid Khan, Kane Richardson and Jake Weatherald for the Crows.

Hartlett picked up Sarah Lowe, Travis Head, Phil Salt, Chadd Sayers and Harry Nielsen for Port.

They also announced that Darren Lehmann would coach the Crows side, while Port Adelaide will be led by Barry “Nugget” Rees.

Patterson learnt she’d been picked up by the Crows as she was boarding a plane in Sydney.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a stellar 12 months of cricket, which has put her back into national selection contention and she played for the Governor-general’s XI against India on Tuesday.

But the cause behind the special T20 showdown – to raise funds for the state’s bushfire appeal in the wake of the devastating fire – is one close to her heart: she grew up on Kangaroo Island and her family still lives there.

Sunday’s game will be played with modified rules and the 13 players on each of the teams will be rotated through the field, with only 11 players able to bat.

Hartlett said young gun Rozee had been really impressing in the nets.

“I wouldn’t bowl it full to him,” he warned.

Lynch laughed: “That why we’ve got Richo (Richardson)”.

Close to 30,000 tickets have been sold to the one-off special cricket match where 100 per cent of net proceeds will be donated to the state’s Bushfire Appeal.

Lynch thanked Adelaide Oval for hosting the game.

“We both love playing footy here and we’re very lucky and fortunate we get to play a game of cricket here now too.”

Tickets are on sale through Ticketek. Free public transport for ticket holders.
