Raiders duo Elliott Whitehead, John Bateman in Golden Boot contention

THE list of nominations for the 2018 Golden Boot award has grown with Raiders duo John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead added to the mix.

CANBERRA Raiders duo John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead have been added to the long list for the Rugby League International Federation’s Golden Boot award following England’s win over New Zealand.

The pair and joined by their international teammate Tommy Makinson and Kiwi stars Shaun Johnson and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak on the list for the award which will be announced on November 7.

Bateman will join internationals Whitehead, Josh Hodgson and fellow new signing from Wigan Ryan Sutton in the nation’s capital in 2019.

Last week Sydney Roosters stars Boyd Cordner and James Tedesco were nominated alongside by their Kangaroos teammate Valentine Holmes and North Queensland’s Jason Taumalolo and his Tonga teammate Sio Siua Taukeiaho.

The award will cover all full international games played between the final of the Rugby League World Cup last December and November 4.

The list will be reduced to four names later this week before the winner is announced at an event in Leeds.

For the first time there will be an award for the best player in the women’s game with Australia’s Ali Brigginshaw and Isabelle Kelly short-listed alongside Honey Hireme of New Zealand and Georgia Roche of England.

The RLIF will also be honouring the players who have made over 50 international appearances.

Previous winners of the Golden Boot include Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater and Greg Inglis.
