Pride coach to take back seat in Lightning Challenge

Northern Pride coach Ty Williams will take a back seat when the club hits the field in the Lightning Challenge’s opening round on Saturday.

Northern Pride coach Ty Williams will take a back seat when the club hits the field in the Lightning Challenge’s opening round on Saturday.

The former Cowboys flyer will take on a different role on match days for the six-week rugby league series to bolster his knowledge and skills in all aspects of coaching.

“I wouldn’t mind just having a more hands-on role with the players, potentially running some water, and just seeing how it all generates out on the field,” Williams said.

The Intrust Super Cup coach revealed last month his desire to coach in the NRL, expressing his interest in taking up a role at the Cowboys.

For Williams, the coaching bug didn’t bite until he returned to Cairns to play for the Pride in 2011 — but it hasn’t gone away since.

“It was through the role I had with the club as the Indigenous engagement officer,” Williams said.

“I got the opportunity to go to remote communities and saw just how much of an effect rugby league had on people.

“I picked up so much knowledge along the way, especially spending 10 years in a full-time system, that I didn’t want to waste and bury with me.

“That was the main thought process, after that I did my Level 2 and went from there.”

Pride Intrust Super Cup assistant coach Bevan Walker will coach the Northern Pride Giants, while under-20s coach Dave Scott will coach the Northern Pride Reef Kings.
