He’s been to three Olympics, but for Matt Denny, none has matched the spirit of Paris.
Hailing from Allora in rural Queensland, the gentle giant scored a bronze medal in discus amid a roaring crowd in the Stade de France.
The win still hasn’t quite sunk in, but he’s been processing it alongside pole vaulter and close friend Nina Kennedy, who he started his athletics career with in 2013.
“To be out in front of 80,000 people, to give her hug and say ‘congrats’ and how proud I am of her … those memories live with you a long time,” Denny said at ASICS House.
As well as the bronze medal on his chest (which he has yet to take off), Denny has been presented with a pair of custom ASICS sneakers designed by Anarchimyst.
His one-of-a-kind pair of kicks feature a bronze logo, with 69.31m painted on the toe, and “Made in Allora” emblazoned on the back.
Inside the shoes, there is a chocolate milk graphic, in a nod to his favourite drink.
With one medal under his belt, the Queenslander has big goals for the next eight years, with the Brisbane Games in 2032 set firmly in his sights.
“I think we can make something pretty cool happen at home in Brisbane.”
