Matildas take over UK in transfer frenzy

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson has again turned to uncapped players to fill the holes left by three untimely injuries for the upcoming clash with Mexico.

Katrina Gorry, Clare Hunt and Courtney Nevin will all miss the friendly, with Gorry seriously in doubt for the Olympics.

Gustavsson has previously how important the game is for their Olympic preparation but has overlooked in form capped players such as Chidiac who was part of the World Cup team.

Emily Gielnik has been in good form for Melbourne Victory this season after a string of injuries. She has only played 12 of the 21 games- scoring seven goals and registering two assists.

Gielnik is no stranger to the Matildas set up with 57 national team appearances, but she has been out of the side since June 2023.

Winonah Heatley, who plays for Nordsjælland and Brisbane Roar winger Sharn Freier round out the new additions.

Heatley, 22, was last called into a Matildas camp in 2022. She is one of the leading defenders in the Danish league.

Freir has been a standout down the win for Brisbane Roar, where she plays alongside Tameka Yallop.

It is the first senior call up for the 22-year-old who spent last season on the sideline with an ACL injury.

Experienced Matildas midfielder Gorry could be in doubt for the Olympics - revealing on social media her WSL season is over.

Gorry, who joined West Ham in January, injured ankle in the weekend’s loss to Chelsea.

She was seen in a moon boot after the match and on crutches.

While the club is yet to issue an official statement Gorry has shared on Instagram that her season is over.

“Thank you everyone for all your messages. Unfortunately my season with West Ham has been cut short.

“I’ve spent the last few days sitting with my emotions and now it’s times to face this next challenge and trust in my body to come back stronger and more in love with the game.”

Gorry, who has made some very obvious hints this Olympics could be her last major tournament for the Matildas, didn’t reveal the extent or nature of the injury.

She obviously won’t be fit for the game against Mexico on April 10,a nd while it opened the door for Clare Wheeler to get a start or even Alex Chidiac to get a call up, Gustavsson has turned to uncapped players.

It is unsure of the midfielder will be fit in time for the Paris Olympics in July.

She isn’t the only player racing the clock with Clare Hunt suffering from a stress fracture in her foot.

The PSG player missed her recent club match and is expected to be ruled out of the upcoming friendly with Mexico.

The Matildas will already be without Sam Kerr who tore her ACL.
