Thanks for following news.com.au’s live coverage of day 12 of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

It was a chaotic start as Michelle Jenneke dramatically crashed in the 110m hurdles, an Australian hockey player was arrested after a cocaine bust and there was carnage in the 5000m heats.

But it was epic from there as Australia added a staggering four gold medals to its tally.

Matt Wearn (sailing), Keegan Palmer (skateboarding), our men’s pursuit team (cycling) and Nina Kennedy (pole vault) all saluted to boost our tally to 18 gold medals, our best ever at an Olympic Games.

On the team front, the Opals did what the Boomers couldn’t and beat Serbia to move into the semifinals but the Sharks suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat in their water polo quarterfinal against the USA.

Australia is now third on the medal tally, five golds clear of host nation France with just a few days to go.
