Swimmer Ariarne Titmus’ relationship with her coach has created headlines around the world at the Tokyo Olympics, but it’s her romantic life that that is now in the spotlight.

The 20-year-old’s back-to-back gold medals in the Tokyo pool has made her the biggest star of the 2021 Games so far with the country falling in love with the Queenslander.

Her spiking popularity has come with new interest in her private live as Australia tries to learn more about the champion swimmer that is the talk of the nation. Everything from her family life, dad Steve’s viral celebrations at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and coach Dean Boxall’s maniacal celebrations this week has helped make her one of the most popular athletes in Australia.

Her romantic life is also a fascination for Australia with Titmus previously declining opportunities to speak about her relationship with fellow-swimmer Kyle Niesler.

Titmus and Niesler have reportedly been dating for more than a year and have posted adorable photos together on Instagram.

The photos show them together on date nights and even on a holiday together in Noosa.

Despite the pair having no qualms about posting photos together on social media, mystery continues to surround Niesler’s position in Titmus’ life. Titmus has never spoken about their relationship publicly.

The former Griffith University student competed at the Australian Olympic Swimming Trials on the Gold Coast earlier this year, missing out on a spot on the plane to Tokyo having competed in the men’s 200m individual medley.

Niesler is also a junior Queensland champion swimmer. Titmus has been based in Brisbane since moving from Tasmania at the age of 14 where she linked up with Boxall when she joined the St Peters Western Swim Club.

The couple have previously celebrated Titmus’ results in the pool, including during April’s national championships — and they will have plenty to cheer about when Titmus returns home next week at the end of her Olympic swimming program.

Titmus is still competing for a crazy third gold medal on Saturday in the 800m freestyle final.

She has already created two iconic moments in Tokyo with her wins over American champion Katie Ledecky in the 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle.

Titmus said she became emotional after the 400m freestyle gold medal when she saw Boxall tear up on the side of the pool.

“He means everything to me,” Titmus said. “We didn’t discuss what I wanted to do in the pool. It was more of a have fun moment. We practised this for so long. I just knew what I had to do when I got out there.

“It was actually hard to contain it (the emotion). I could see Dean on the other side bawling his eyes out.

“You don’t see that that often so that made me want to tear up.”

Titmus later added: “This is just as much for him as it is for me. He has sacrificed a lot in his family life, his kids and his wife, for his job. He puts 100 per cent into being a swimming coach. I would not be here without him.”
