Matthew Dellavedova perfect 10 in Australian Boomers v Serbia at Rio Olympics, Mills, Bogut outstanding

MATTHEW Dellavedova put in one of the greatest performances seen from a Boomer and he wasn’t the only gun performer as Australia beat Serbia today.

THE Boomers’ 95-80 win over Serbia saw them start the Olympics with a 2-0 record for the first time in history, and while there were standouts, it was another impressive, balanced display from Australia.

The Serbians put up much more of a fight than the Boomers’ first opponent – France - but it was Australia who put together an incredible fourth quarter run to cap off another dominant performance.

Here are player ratings for the Boomers’ second-straight win in Rio.

Matthew Dellavedova – 10

It seems brazen to award another perfect game to an Australian – Andrew Bogut had that honour after the Boomers’ win over France – but Matthew Dellavedova more than earned it.

The Milwaukee Bucks point guard put forward a masterful effort as the team’s lead guard, striking the perfect balance between scoring the ball and finding his teammates.

Dellavedova finished with 23 points and 13 assists, but what was more impressive, was his zero turnovers in 29 minutes of action. He also shot 88 percent from the field; rounding out the ideal performance any coach wants in his or her point guard.

While Dellavedova had some defensive lapses in the third quarter – going under screens for Milos Teodosic, leading to back-to-back three-pointers for the Euroleague veteran – that doesn’t take away from what was a near-perfect game for the Maryborough-native.

Patty Mills – 8

For the second game in a row, Patty Mills was very quietly the Boomers’ top scorer.

The San Antonio Spurs guard struggled from beyond the arc, early in the game – finishing 2-for-9 from downtown - but made the most of his in-between game to give the Boomers a big scoring punch in the second quarter.

As always, Mills was extremely feisty on the defensive end throughout the entire game, and helped wrap up the win with his fourth quarter scoring effort; his mid-range jump-shot in transition, all but sealing the win for Australia.

Joe Ingles – 6

Joe Ingles didn’t get out to the best of starts, but made sure to end this fixture with a bang. Two, actually.

The Utah Jazz wing’s court vision was on show in the first quarter of the Boomers’ win, but some live-ball turnovers in the second quarter helped Serbia gain some important momentum.

A hard foul from Ingles in the fourth quarter could have derailed the Boomers, but they managed to keep their composure, with the Adelaide-native hitting two big three-pointers to seal the win for Australia.

Aron Baynes – 7

Baynes was relatively quiet in this one, but when the fourth quarter came around, the big-man stepped up.

Throughout the first three quarters, Baynes was almost a non-factor. While he showed off his unique ability to be a nuisance for the opposition inside the paint, the production just wasn’t there.

When the final period began, that’s when Baynes started to heat up.

With Bogut sitting with foul trouble, the Detroit Pistons big-man made his presence felt; finishing a number of alley-oops from Dellavedova, showing off his activity on the offensive glass, and playing some extremely admirable defence.

Andrew Bogut – 8

Never underestimate the impact Andrew Bogut has on this Boomers team, on both ends of the floor.

Bogut’s battle with Miroslav Raduljica was a joy to watch in the opening quarter, with both big-man going right at each other.

The new Dallas Mavericks centre surprisingly hit a three-pointer in that first quarter, but it was his impact in the second quarter – on both ends – that was remarkable.

While Bogut’s passing was on-point, and his interior defensive effort was a difference-maker, he loses a point for his inability to remain on the floor.

The big-man picked up a needless technical foul in the second quarter – with Serbia going on a run after he sat – and picked up a quick foul, early in the fourth quarter. For the Boomers to remain competitive, Bogut will need to do his best to stay on the floor, particularly because there’s no Australian frontcourt option who even comes close to matching his defensive impact.

Kevin Lisch - 6

Lisch was coming off an impressive performance against France, but wasn’t able to match his offensive output in the Boomers’ win over Serbia.

The NBL MVP struggled with his shot, and found it difficult getting to his spots, finishing with just two points; with zero made field goals.

Where Lisch really makes his impact is on the defensive end, where he was able to play a part in slowing down Serbia’s talented backcourt. The new Sydney Kings point guard’s offence will come, but in the meantime, his ability to guard will keep him in games, and he was able to make an impact in the crucial fourth quarter of this game.

Ryan Broekhoff – 6

Broekhoff seemingly can’t buy a bucket from downtown, but he was able to make his impact felt in other ways.

Shooting 0-for-3 from beyond the arc isn’t ideal for the team’s resident sharpshooter, but his willingness to slash to the rim and move off the ball is admirable, given his three-point troubles.

The NBA hopeful is Australia’s best defensive option at the three-spot, but he’ll need to find his jump-shot if he wants to play more than 10 minutes a game.

David Andersen (L).

David Andersen - 6

Andersen continues to be a reliable scoring option in the front-court for the Boomers, coming off the bench due to Bogut’s foul trouble, and making a real impact on the offensive end.

The new Melbourne United big-man finished with nine points and six rebounds, hitting his open jump-shots, while converting a nice move in the post.

Andersen hit an important three-pointer at the end of the third quarter, halting some Serbian momentum, but it’s the defensive end where the power forward lacks; the Melbourne-native making little impact on that end of the floor during some of Serbia’s big runs.

Cameron Bairstow - 5

Bairstow was able to steal extended minutes, due to Bogut’s foul trouble, but essentially remained a non-factor.

He pulled down some rebounds, and finished nicely at the rim after a nice stretch of Boomers ball movement, but there was nothing spectacular about the new Brisbane Bullet’s performance.

Whatever the case, Bairstow did enough to justify his minutes moving forward, which is likely to keep Brock Motum buried in the bench.
