What’s the Buzz: Mavrik Geyer to make his own mark at Penrith Panthers

Mark Geyer has revealed his one piece of advice for his son Mavrik, who is on the cusp of following in his father’s footsteps after securing a full-time spot in the Panthers’ squad in 2022.

Another son-of-a-gun could storm onto the NRL scene this year, with Mavrik Geyer on the cusp of following in father Mark’s famous footsteps.

A towering second rower just like his old man, MG version 2.0 is almost through his first NRL pre-season after earning a full-time spot in the Panthers’ squad as a development player.

Standing 193cm and weighing 104kg, Mavrik is already taller than his behemoth father.

“Yeah, but only because I have shrunk,” Mark Geyer said.

“I used to be 6’5.”

Knocking back the Storm to re-sign with the club his father helped make famous – even after a personal phone call from Craig Bellamy – Mavrik has spent the summer training with the premiership pack.

“He is a great kid,” Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said.

“The Geyer family has done a great job getting him to where he is at and he brings a real energy to the team. He is a classic development player.

“He has a massive amount of ability but is also pretty green. He is an exciting talent and has been a very good student.”

Mark only has one piece of advice for his son.

“Yeah, I tell him not to do what I did,” Geyer.

“The game has changed a lot since I was his age and these days you can’t get away with anything that I did. He has seen plenty of my games and he just says, ‘how the hell did you get away with it?’. And I tell him I didn’t. That I was suspended for 34 weeks of my career.”

Geyer, who is kicking his own goals as host of Triple M’s Breakfast with MG, Jess and Pagey, is not expecting his son to spend too much time in the sin bin.

“He was a bit like me in his teenage years but he has grown out of it,” Mark said.

“He has a beautiful temperament. I don’t want to wrap him but he is a good human. He just loves his footy and now has an opportunity to make something from it.”
