The NRL have asked for a please explain from the Bulldogs after the Tigers were caught off guard by Lachie Galvin’s premature appearance at Belmore.

The Bulldogs only had to wait a few hours to parade Galvin after he was formally released by the Tigers on Friday afternoon.

However, the Bulldogs could be in hot water with the NRL after Galvin was spotted training in Bulldogs gear at Belmore on Friday morning.

Players are naturally unable to train with a rival team while still contracted with another club.

The Dragons received a $40,000 suspended fine for allowing Ronald Volkman to train with the team despite not having a formal contract with the club.

The Bulldogs were criticised in 2021 after a leaked photo showed Viliame Kikau in a Bulldogs polo shirt despite being contracted to the Panthers. Kikau had just agreed to join Canterbury in 2023 when his deal expired at Penrith.

Galvin was captured wearing Canterbury gear on Friday as his former club the Tigers still worked through the terms of his release. That became official hours after the video surfaced.

Tigers boss Shane Richardson’s statement was brief.

“We wish Lachlan all the best with another NRL club,” he said in a statement.

Galvin added: “I am grateful to the Wests Tigers board and management for granting my early release. I wish the playing group success in the future.”

The Bulldogs NRL squad were given this week off given they have the bye this weekend. However, Galvin was on duty as he looked to hit the ground running in the lead-up to his expected debut for the club next weekend against Parramatta, the club he turned down to sign with the Bulldogs.

The 19-year-old prodigy is expected to start his Bulldogs journey potentially off the interchange bench before eventually slotting into a place in the halves.

His move to the Dogs comes after weeks of tense negotiations involving his agent Isaac Moses and Tigers chief executive Richardson aimed at ending a bitter legal fight between the parties over claims of bullying.

The legal dispute is expected to be dropped. The Tigers also received $170,000 from the Bulldogs to secure Galvin’s release.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall said the team were ready to move on.

“I guess everyone’s probably a little bit sick of talking about it and it being reported,” Marshall said

“But we’re just focused on the game. I know it’s a clichéd thing to say, but we have to be.

“It’s been a great week at training. Everyone’s looking forward to just playing. We had a week off last week with the bye.

“The energy around the place has been really good, really positive.”

Asked whether he was disappointed about Galvin’s exit, he said: “I don’t know if disappointment’s the word.

“We like the players we’ve got, we love the squad we’ve got, we’re excited about some of the young players coming through and for us.”
