Video that sparked Cronulla Sharks to sign rugby sevens star Lachie Miller

The video package shows Lachie Miller’s mastery of balance and explosive speed — and led to the Cronulla Sharks snaring the latest cross-code sports star.

Video that sealed NRL deal

This is the video highlights reel that has sparked the NRL’s latest cross-code switch.

Olympian and Australian Rugby Sevens team member Lachie Miller is poised to sign with the Cronulla Sharks on a two-year deal.

Providing his passes a final medical examination the blistering try-sneak will commence pre-season training with the Sharks next month.

The Tokyo Olympics squad member came to Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon’s attention when Miller’s highlights reel was sent to the Sharks coaching staff several months ago.

The video package shows Miller’s mastery of beautiful balance and explosive speed to beat his opposition — time and again.

He can play fullback, wing, centre or hooker — a versatile footballer who has drawn comparisons to Roosters-bound utility Connor Watson.

Fitzgibbon and the Sharks took into account Miller’s obvious evasive footwork in Sevens Rugby, but it was vision of the 27-year-old playing in the 15-a-side game in the Shute Shield with Randwick, that triggered a recent meeting with the Sharks football department.

Cronulla were highly impressed with Miller’s work ethic and desire to crack the NRL - by returning to the sport he grew-up playing as a junior.

Miller’s background included being a very talented rugby league junior with the Coffs Harbour Comets before playing first grade with the rival Sawtell Panthers.

As revealed by The Daily Telegraph last July, it wasn’t until rugby’s legendary Ella brothers Mark, Gary and Glen, held their sevens tournament in Coffs Harbour four years ago that Miller’s career took off.

“I played in Glen’s team in the Ella 7’s,” Miller said.

“He told me I’ve got some talent and should be playing for Randwick in Sydney and sevens footy.

“I got into the development system with the ARU and then a contract to play sevens.

“I’ve always played league at halfback, fullback or hooker and loved running the football

“That’s sevens footy. Heaps of running, plenty of space, but it’s really hard.

“The contact isn’t as physical as NRL but in the sevens it’s short and sharp and you’re constantly sprinting — it’s a different fitness to rugby league.”

Miller will add depth to a 2022 Sharks backline that has salary cap room to move following the departure from their top-30 roster of outside backs Josh Dugan, Will Chambers and Nene Macdonald.
