In horse racing, the easiest tip for beginners is to follow the money.
When the market moves, so should your feet.
In the 1997 Melbourne Cup, the bookmakers were offering as much as $14 for Jezabeel on the morning of the race.
Thanks to more than $1 million in bets by Kerry Packer, Jezabeel’s price was slashed by half before she went on to win the great race.
The Sydney and Melbourne betting rings were left in tatters.
Rugby league is no different.
Ahead of the 2025 season, the money is moving for South Sydney – and the TAB are nervous.
“As it stands, Souths, the Broncos and Storm would be big results for punters against TAB,” TAB’s media manager Rohan Welsh said.
“Souths have been the genuine value play.
“They’re $21 into $17 and threatening to tighten further with the weight of money coming for Wayne Bennett’s men.
“They’re fourth best backed (to win the premiership) in a market dominated by the Storm and Panthers.
“They are clearly viewed as a side with a roster that probably still has its premiership window open now they’ve added a high-profile successful coach.
“If they can get Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray, Cody Walker, Jack Wighton and co firing they’re a side that can do damage. “They’re also well supported in the top four market as you’d expect.”
Let’s look at the weight of money for every other team ahead of the 2025 season:
