Can Titans build on 2016’s success and continue their form in 2017?

FINAL VERDICT: There was a lot to like about the Titans in 2016 but they could still become the basket cases of the NRL if they don’t work hard to build on the success they found.

THERE was a lot to like about the Titans in 2016 but they could still become the basket cases of the NRL if they don’t work hard to build on the success they found.

Daily Telegraph journalists Dean Ritchie and Matt Logue give their final verdict on the Titans.

What went right:

A lot. The club played finals footy and signed superstar Jarryd Hayne. The Titans are fun to watch. They played a nice style and each team member is playing for the bloke next to him. They just get about their work in a thorough, efficient and professional manner. It is a tribute to coach Neil Henry. Signing Hayne was massive. He is true superstar. Attracting Hayne shows the Gold Coast can once again lure in the biggest names in rugby league. Ash Taylor emerged as a future star while their forwards were competitive and physical.

What went wrong:

A few off-fields dramas marred the back-end of their season but Gold Coast can be proud of season 2106. Maybe Gold Coast could bolster their depth in the forwards. Greg Bird eventually left shortly after more off-field controversy and is headed to the Super League despite interest from Manly and Newcastle in the former NSW back-rower. Luke Douglas’ move — also to Super League — will leave another hole.

What went right:

Plenty. The Gold Coast’s rise from cellar dwellers to legitimate threats was one of the success stories of the season. Rookie halfback Ash Taylor was outstanding for the Titans, while prop Ryan James led from the front with 12 tries.

What went wrong:

Gold Coast missed more tackles than every other team, barring last placed Newcastle. The Titans also ranked last for tackle breaks, with just 551.
