The NRL have received some welcome news when Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson and three star players, including Latrell Mitchell, were given the all clear after being tested for the coronavirus.

It comes as Robinson and Mitchell had an unlikely meeting in an Eastern Suburbs medical centre on Monday.

In a remarkable coincidence, the premiership-winning coach and his grand final hero spent the day in isolation from their footy teams, then bumped into each other for the first time since Mitchell’s tumultuous departure from the NRL champions late last year.

Mitchell’s swift departure from the Roosters — where he did not even partake in an and-of-season trip to the United States — was one of the messiest break-ups in NRL history.

After drawn-out negotiations, the 22-year-old joined bitter rivals South Sydney.

Mitchell was one of three players sent home from an education day at Redfern on Monday where all players and staff were briefed on strict COVID-19 protocols.

The Daily Telegraph can also reveal Rabbitohs skipper Adam Reynolds and front-rower Liam Knight were also sent for COVID-19 tests after presenting at training with flu-like symptoms — but have since been cleared.

Robinson spent the day at home, communicating with his staff in meetings on Zoom.

“You’ve just got to do the right thing and stay away if you’ve got any symptoms, even a runny nose,” he said.

“I’ve heard a few players around the game are in the same boat and couldn’t turn up today. You’ve just got to be super careful.”

Robinson says he hopes to have a clearance to be back at training with the rest of the coaching staff tomorrow to start preparing for the May 28 return to footy.

The Roosters are expected to be playing their arch rivals the South Sydney Rabbitohs on the Thursday or Friday night in the first round.
