NRL finals series: Boyd Cordner alleviates fears of serious injury after limping off against Souths

Roosters fan can breathe a sigh of relief after skipper Boyd Cordner confirmed he will be fit for his side’s next match in the NRL final series despite limping off against Souths on Friday night.

Roosters captain Boyd Cordner is “extremely confident” of being right to go for the Tricolours in a fortnight – despite suffering both a worrying quad injury and Brut Big Hit against South Sydney.

Cordner sent a scare through the Roosters camp on Friday night when he limped from the SCG just five minutes before halftime in his side’s stunning 30-6 victory over South Sydney.

Afterwards, Roosters coach Trent Robinson suggested the NSW Origin star should not have been able to return to the field in the second 40 minutes, such was the extent of his injury.

Worse, the 27-year-old also got monstered in a tackle by Rabbitohs forward Jaydn Su’A, yet somehow managed to bounce up and continue running upfield.

“Good hit wasn’t it,” Cordner laughed afterwards.

“He (Su’A) hit me pretty good but obviously the job wasn’t over. And I wasn’t held so I got back to me feet and kept going.”

Cordner also stressed he expected to have fully overcome the quad injury before the team’s next NRL finals match.

“I’m extremely confident I’ll be OK,” he said.

The skipper added that while the problem was on the same side as a niggling calf complaint, the two were not related.

“So I’m not too worried about it,” Cordner said.

“It’s not too severe and I could’ve played on with it.

“It was more when I hit high speed I felt it.

“So it was just about being smart

“I could’ve pushed through the game if I had to, but I just wasn’t 100 per cent carrying the football and I could feel that it was tight.

“And with the situation in the game, where we were, we thought it was smart if I came off. And having the week off now, that helps obviously.

“So I’ll just be resting up, physio and getting it right for whoever we have to play.”
