The latest twist in Curtis Scott’s legal fight to be cleared to start the NRL season

Curtis Scott’s hopes of starting the season with Canberra hang on a meeting between NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and the Raiders recruit’s new lawyer, who has taken a more conciliatory tone.

Curtis Scott’s new lawyer wants to set up a meeting with the NRL integrity unit in the hope that “some common sense might prevail”.

Scott’s hopes of starting the season with his new club Canberra will be determined by the discretion of NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg as part of the game’s no fault stand down policy.

While Scott has pleaded not guilty to all six charges relating to his Australia Day arrest, he could still be forced to sit out the opening rounds as he awaits his next court appearance on March 20.

But after parting ways with former lawyer Danny Eid who had accused the NRL of using bullying tactics, Scott’s new lawyer Sam Macedone appears to be taking a far more subtle approach.

Macedone finally viewed all the different files and videos related to the case on Monday and said the next step would be to arrange a meeting with the NRL to try and come to realistic resolution.

“Pleas of not guilty have been entered,” Macedone said.

“The NRL have at long last been permitted to view the body-worn video of the incident so that will give them first-hand description of what occurred.

“Hopefully they can exercise some discretion. Hopefully some common sense might prevail.”

Asked what a common sense outcome would be, he said: “Common sense would be looking at it realistically and making a decision about what did and didn’t happen.

“Whether the allegations can be substantiated or not.

“The one thing about videos is they don’t lie. They tell the truth.

“And whilst I can tell you what happened, it doesn’t mean that is exactly what is on the video.

“The video is everything. It captures the whole lot.

“And when you look at that you can get a much better feeling for what actually happened.”

Given Scott has pleaded not guilty to all police charges, the NRL’s determination would be extremely interesting.

Scott’s availability will also have major implications for last year’s grand finalists given the Raiders released Joey Leilua to Wests Tigers and they simply don’t have a recognised centre option if Scott is rubbed out.

Most likely Nick Cotric would shift into the centres and Michael Oldfield onto a wing.

Scott last week conceded he had put himself in a bad situation because of the alcohol and he vowed not to drink for the rest of the NRL season.
