Todd Carney will turn back the clock when he returns to rugby league in the annual Legends of League tournament at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday.
Carney will join former teammates Chris Heighington and Terry Campese in a Barbarians side including players with no association to the five NRL clubs competing.
Former NRL stars, including Danny Buderus, Wendell Sailor, Steve Menzies and Willie Mason will participate in the one day tournament.
Carney confirmed his involvement in the Legends of League event via an Instagram post.
“I can’t wait to have a run with the Barbarians and my old teammates Chris Heighington and Terry Campese plus the legendary Matt Bowen out the back,” Carney said.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun to play against some of my idols growing up at the Legends of League.”
Carney’s Legends of League debut comes a week after he announced he’ll captain-coach the Byron Bay Devils in the Northern Rivers competition next season.
The Devils’ deal puts an end to his hopes of playing in the NRL in 2019.
Since he was sacked by Cronulla in 2014 over the infamous ‘bubbler’ incident, Carney has had stints overseas with Catalans Dragons, Salford Red Devils and Hull Kingston Rovers.
He made his NRL debut in 2004 and played with the Raiders and Roosters before he was sacked by the Sharks.
The Legends of League tournament will be held on Saturday, November 17, raising funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation.
