NRL 2022: Broncos young gun Ezra Mam is line to take over as Adam Reynolds’ scrumbase partner

He’s been impressive for Souths Logan Magpies in the Hostplus Cup this season and now Ezra Mam could find himself in the NRL firing line as the Broncos battle major injury concerns.

Brisbane livewire Ezra Mam will come into consideration to replace Albert Kelly this week as the Broncos injury woes continue to worsen.

Broncos five-eighth Kelly suffered a Lisfranc injury to his foot in Brisbane’s 20-6 loss to the Warriors on Saturday afternoon, which could see the NRL veteran ruled out for at least the next month.

Broncos head of performance Dave Ballard confirmed the injury on Sunday and said Kelly would see a specialist later in the week.

It has opened the door for Mam to partner captain Adam Reynolds in the halves for their clash against the Roosters on Friday night.

Mam has been impressive for Souths Logan Magpies in the Hostplus Cup this season, scoring two tries in three games and averaging around 100 run metres a game.

The young gun is now set to come into consideration for the Broncos No.6 jersey, with Billy Walters and Tyson Gamble also in the frame for selection.

The Broncos will also be without forward leader Patrick Carrigan who has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a knee injury.

Carrigan suffered a grade two strain to his medial cruciate ligament and will be sidelined between four to six weeks.

It’s a big blow for the Broncos to lose Carrigan, who was averaging 14 runs a game and 116 run metres so far this season to be one of the more dominant forwards for Brisbane in the past four games.

The Broncos will certainly miss Patrick Carrigan.

“It’s a tough game,” coach Kevin Walters said.

“Patty will be missing now for probably a good month or so, it’s not great.

“(Kelly) has got a foot injury and he’ll be a long-termer. It won’t be something that can be fixed in a couple weeks.”

Boom backrowers Jordan Riki (ribs) and Kurt Capewell (calf) are likely to return to the squad this week after being late withdrawals from the clash with the Warriors at the weekend.
