A shock nominee on the wing, two Tigers get one last chance and a host of grand final stars in line for more hardware.

The nominees for every major Dally M award have been released and there's more than a few surprises.

James Tedesco, the bookies favourite for the overall medal, seems a certainty to win fullback of the year ahead of grand final opponent Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, last year’s winner Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and fellow stars Jahrome Hghes and Clint Gutherson.

Payne Haas is the standout nominee for rookie of the year and may pick up two gongs after he was nominated for prop of the year.

Halfback will be hotly contested with Daly Cherry-Evans, Mitchell Moses and Mitchell Pearce all in the running.

Tigers veterans Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah have been nominated for five-eighth and hooker of the year respectively, while Edrick Lee was a shock nominee on the wing after playing just 14 matches.

NRL’S CRITERIA FOR HOW THE DALLY M VOTING PROCESS WORKS

The Dally M Team of the Year recognises the best player in each position across 25 rounds of regular season competition. An “Interchange” category was established in season 2017 acknowledging the importance of impact/utility players in the modern game and their ability to change the momentum of a match.

Consistent with the Dally M Medal, Team of the Year voting occurs after each regular season premiership match.

Players who receive Dally M Medal points will automatically receive 3, 2, 1 for the Dally M Team of the Year in their respective positions (i.e. Hooker; Fullback; Interchange).

Players selected by the judges for the remaining positions each receive 1 Dally M Team of the Year point in their respective on-field position.

Players who are suspended throughout the season are deducted three (3) Dally M Medal points for each week they are out of play.

Any player suspended for two separate offences in any one season immediately becomes ineligible for the Dally M Medal and Team of the Year.

All votes are submitted by the judges after each premiership match.

As further background, one of the key considerations is that Maika was suspended in Round Nine for one match (for a Grade Three high tackle) – which would have seen three points deducted from his total.

Having Blake Ferguson, who also polled well in the winger category, on his team, would also have impacted on his scoring.
