Star Parramatta recruit Blake Ferguson rang in the New Year in hospital after contracting a serious foot infection.

Ferguson, the reigning Dally M winger of the year, was admitted to St George Hospital several days ago after suffering a cut on his foot on Christmas Day.

When the infection continued to worsen, Ferguson checked himself in.

He is likely to get an MRI so doctors can get a clearer picture on potential damage to his foot.

If the infection doesn’t clear up Ferguson will require an operation.

The news is a blow to the blue and gold’s pre-season plans, with Ferguson heading up a big recruitment drive following the disastrous wooden spoon season the club endured in 2018.

“Blake Ferguson is currently in hospital receiving treatment for an infection in his foot,” said a Parramatta spokesman.

“The club’s medical team is monitoring the situation closely and at this stage we expect him to recover in time for the start of 2019 training.”

Ferguson signed a three-year deal with Parramatta worth $1.5 million and is fresh off the best year of his career.

He formed a crucial part of the Tricolours premiership charge and showed the off-field issues that dogged the early part of his career are well behind him.

The former New South Wales and Australian representative is expected to be the punishing presence Parramatta have lacked in the outside backs since the departure of Semi Radradra.

In July, Ferguson outlined he chose Parramatta over a longer and more lucrative deal with Newcastle in order to stay closer to his family.

“I don’t want my kids growing up like I did. I want to be around them as much as I can,” Ferguson said.

“Nothing is more important to me and playing at Parramatta will allow me to do that.”
