Parramatta’s impressive start to 2019 has been soured by a serious injury to Nathan Brown with the forward set to miss at least three months of football.
Brown only lasted 19 minutes before suffering a tear to his left pectoral muscle as he was attempting to make a tackle.
The exact time frame of his recovery is still to be determined with club medical staff still deciding the best course of action regarding his treatment.
His untimely injury is likely to see Tepai Moeroa move into the backrow after he played Sunday’s game in the front-row. New recruit Junior Paulo will also be available for selection for this weekend’s clash against Canterbury and he will take Moeroa’s spot up front.
In better news for their opponents from the weekend, Penrith’s Hame Sele was cleared of any serious injury after he left the field with a suspected broken arm.
But scans on Monday revealed there was no break to his arm and the club confirmed he is a chance to play against the Newcastle Knights on Saturday.
Utility Jarome Luai clutched at his knee after he got tangled in a tackle with Parramatta’s Clint Gutherson. Luckily for Luai he escaped any serious damage but it’s understood the Panthers believe Gutherson should have been cited for deliberately lashing out in the tackle.
Panthers forward James Tamou dislocated a finger as he crashed over to score a try on Sunday but the injury is nothing more than a painful annoyance and he will also line-up against the Knights.
St George Illawarra forward Tyson Frizell suffered a lacerated testicle against the North Queensland Cowboys. He required surgery to repair the injury and at this stage he is out for at least two weeks with club medical staff unwilling to give an exact date on his likely return.
Already down on troops in the backrow, coach Paul McGregor is likely to elevate Blake Lawrie into the starting side with Josh Kerr to come in as Lawrie’s bench replacement.
At the Tigers, captain Moses Mbye will be available for selection against the Warriors on Sunday. He suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury during the preseason and was forced to sit out his side’s season opener against Manly. Mbye will return at fullback meaning Corey Thompson is likely to be shifted out onto the wing at the expense of Robert Jennings. Injured winger David Nofoaluma is also a chance of making a comeback this week. He was initially sidelined for two to three weeks with a shoulder injury.
Canterbury’s Adam Elliott copped a minor blow to the ankle over in New Zealand in the Bulldogs’ 40-6 loss to the Warriors. The forward will be available for selection today.
