Bulldogs salary cap drama: Coach Dean Pay won’t pay the price for other’s mistakes

HE has guided his side to just three wins from 14 matches this season as the club tries not to fall apart at the seams — but Bulldogs coach Dean Pay’s position is “as safe as a bank”.

HE has guided his side to just three wins from 14 matches this season but coach Dean Pay’s position at Canterbury is safe.

The Bulldogs have been a bitter disappointment this season with first-year coach Pay copping heavy criticism at times from fans on social media.

Canterbury director and football club committee member Chris Anderson said Pay had the full backing of his club’s board.

“Not a problem — he inherited this like we inherited this,” Anderson said. “’Deano’ is as safe as a bank. He is doing his best for us and he isn’t being judged. We are all in this together.

“The players like him, he is doing well with them. We are 100 per cent behind him.”

Pay has been forced to confront a myriad of issues — none his fault — as he desperately attempts to lift Canterbury back into a competitive NRL side.

“This isn’t his fault,” Anderson said. “’Deano’ is doing well, mate.”

Meanwhile Canterbury will engage in scientific methods and evidence to have star recruit Kieran Foran back on the field next year fit and mended.

Foran has been ruled out for the remainder of this season through ligament damage to his toe. He has endured a modest season at Belmore while battling injury and niggles.

There had been suggestions Canterbury was attempting to offload Foran — a suggestion denied by Anderson.

“The club will get as much scientific knowledge as we can and try and get his body to where it should be to play footy again,” Anderson said. “We will cover it, we will do the best we can do with what we’ve got mate.

“We’ve got Kieran, who unfortunately is struggling and we haven’t got much out of him, mate. That puts a big hole in what you’re trying to do. Kieran is a good kid, a really good kid who is busting his arse.”

The Bulldogs revealed last week Foran wouldn’t play again this year. Canterbury travel to Newcastle this Saturday for a game they will have targeted to win.
