Five things we learned: David Fifita deserves a 10-year contract
It was a tough loss to swallow for the Broncos, but once again teenager David Fifita proved just how valuable he is to the club. Here are the five things we learned from the match.
We learned plenty about both clubs during the grudge match at Suncorp Stadium, including that the Bunnies are still partial to an elbow to the back of the head.
Here’s the other things we learned from the match.
BENNY’S PLAYMAKING RULES
1. Wayne Bennett is no longer be coach of the Broncos but he taught them a serious lesson in playmaking last night. The Rabbitohs’ spine ran riot around the Broncos in last night’s heated clash at Suncorp Stadium. If Brisbane are any hope of playing finals footy, they need to take a leaf out of Souths playmaking playbook and work on their spine combination.
FIFITA IS A TOTAL BEAST
2. The Broncos should give David Fifita a 10-year contract. His two solo tries were simply brutally beautiful and it kept the Broncos in the contest. The Warriors and Eels are keen to poach Fifita but Brisbane should break the bank to keep him. He tormented Souths. Fifita is one of the best back-rowers to emerge in 20 years.
GILLET’S RETURN WELCOMED
3. Welcome back to the NRL Matt Gillett. The experience of the Broncos workhorse was dearly missed in the past two months and he stepped up when it counted last night. He broke through the Rabbitohs defensive line in the 76th minute to send Kotoni Staggs over to score which set up one of the most thrilling ends to a game this season.
BUNNIES PLAY IT FILTHY
4. Ex-Broncos duo James Roberts and Jaydn Su’A were in the thick of the action. The Souths recruits were both placed on report and sin-binned, Roberts for elbowing Corey Oates and Su’A for crunching Alex Glenn. Both were fired-up to make an impression against the club that didn’t want them.
O’SULLIVAN HOLDS HIS OWN
5. Brisbane’s playmaking stocks were plunged into crisis when Jake Turpin was suspended and Tom Dearden ruled out for the season with injury. However, young gun Sean O’Sullivan stepped up last night in a challenging contest. He set up two tries and ran for 54m.
