PANTHERS 16 V TIGERS 2
Thursday night games so far this year have been bludgers, both from a viewing spectacle as well as when it comes to SuperCoach points.
I mean, right now the highest score is 66, and there’s been several weeks where the Perfect 8 winning score was in the 70s.
That pretty much sums up most Thursday night games!
Let’s look at the key performers.
The Good
Tyrone Phillips (66)
Plenty of SuperCoaches were probably spooked by Phillips dropping a score of just 17 last week, highlighting a lack of workrate, but those who jumped on were rewarded with a strong score and a decent round of price rises to come.
The workrate is still somewhat concerning (25 points in pure base) but the try, two linebreaks and four tackle busts bump up that score nicely.
Non-owners are probably just happy that he didn’t score his double, placing his fingers on the sideline just moments before grounding the ball in the in-goal!
James Maloney (58)
Plenty were scared of Maloney with Cleary but the fact that he retained the goalkicking meant he was always going to have a slightly higher floor.
In promising signs, Maloney and Cleary combined well, possibly the best they have all year, in this game as both took turns being the dominant playmaker and taking opportunities as they saw them.
Maloney threw the cutout pass for the Phillips try (giving him a try assist and a linebreak assist), forced two dropouts, busted a tackle, kicked four goals from five attempts and scored just 14 points in pure base stats.
He will need to be sold soon but the slow cash bleed isn’t as painful when he’s still providing decent scores for now.
The Bad
Robbie Rochow (16)
Jeez if you made the decision to hold Rochow for the byes, you’d be spewing right now! His minutes and workrate have both dropped right off.
He could have been sold a few weeks ago for $433,000 but his price could drop to below $350,000 before Round 13. Ouch.
Luke Brooks (18)
Not entirely surprising to see Brooks here in a game where the only points scored by the Tigers were a penalty goal, but Brooks had been strong all year aside from a Round 1 score of 17.
Otherwise, he had scored in the 40s five times and a few bigger scores on top of that.
He’s another one you could have sold for $601,000 two weeks ago, but he’ll be closer to $450,000 at the start of next week with more cash to drop…
The Ugly
No major injuries to report. Just noting that Trent Merrin got binned (again!) and so did Alex Twal.
