NRL SuperCoach: Buy, Hold, Sell - Round 7

CHRISTIAN Crichton, Peni Terepo and George Jennings were theheadline ‘BUYS’ for last week’s Cheapie Bible, and all three delivered…

Terepo in particular had a massive 57 points in another 50 minutes -the 4% of teams who listened, bravo!

This week Phillip Sami & co. are being sold at a faster rate than BitCoinshares as SuperCoaches look to cash in the cheapies and pounce onfallen guns, what a time to be alive!

‘The Gos’ and Jacks are the twostandouts but I have a left field stud on the cheap that will interest thereal SuperCoach value hunters.

Each week the Cheapie Bible will take a long look at the money-makers, the players we all grow man crushes on - and even the ones who seriously let us down like being stood up on a blind date.

Ultimately, I will sift through who we should be buying, selling andholding of the sub $250k price bracket all season long. As players hike in price past the $300k mark I will give a final verdict before they exit this list!

Here we go…

Jack ‘The Gos’ Gosiewski is a brilliant buy this week.
Jack ‘The Gos’ Gosiewski is a brilliant buy this week.

Jack Gosiewski 2RF (MNL | $192,800) - 42 points

I pre-emptively named ‘The Gos’ a buy two weeks ago before he actually played a game this season on the back of basically no bottom dollar cheapies presenting in the FRF or 2RF categories.

Thankfully, Gos has not only passed the eyeball test, he managed to play the full 80 minutes on the right edge last weekend. Ok, he only scored 42 points - in line with his career 0.5PPM - but he was oh so close to a much bigger score. With the likes of Slade Griffin, Carty, Rochow and Lodge all hitting their peak, you’d be mad not to jump on board.

VERDICT: BUY. BE of -7 and the prospect of a regular 80-minute back rower who plays the round 13 bye? ‘nuff said.

Ryley Jacks is predicted to rise $83,000 this week.
Ryley Jacks is predicted to rise $83,000 this week.

Ryley Jacks 5/8 | HFB (MEL | $258,900) - 69 points

Here we go! This win was a statement by the Storm beating the Knights 40-14 at AAMI Park and Ryley Jacks played a big role with two try assists, a VERY impressive 21 tackles for a half, 10 points in H8’s and a try saving tackle … Good for a whopping 69 points and earning the praise of Craig Bellamy in the post- match presser! That follows his round one score of 71 and leaves the youngster with a BE of -58. Huge.

VERDICT: BUY. Croker, Carty or JMK to Jacks will be very popular this week.

SuperCoach Stats projects Jacks to rise $83,000 this week.

Kurt Capewell CTW | 2RF (CRO | $246,700) - 30 points

I’m going out on a limb here, but Capewell is a well-known SuperCoach stud after his heroics last season as a cheapie! Need I remind you of his 156-point domination of the Tigers in round 15? We know Wade Graham is out for 2-4 weeks on the left edge, and Luke Lewis is in doubt. Whilst the talk is all about the Gallen/Fifita replacements, a $246k dual position CTW|2RF who is capable of scoring 50-60 when playing 80 minutes in the back row with a few weeks of job security (and likely edge back row spot in round 13 with Graham playing Origin) is a tempting option.

VERDICT: BUY. It all just depends how gutsy you are! Don’t do it if you’ve already used max trades.

Christian Crichton CTW (PTH | $214,400) - 56 points

The Cheapie Bible had Crichton as the pick of the two CTW cheapies last week over George Jennings, and SuperCoaches who avoided last week purely off stats and not watching the Panthers games paid the price - it was just a matter of time until he found the try line, and 56 points promptly followed. Josh Mansour is looking at extended time on the sidelines with a broken cheekbone, so Crichton looks locked in the side at least until the byes.

VERDICT: HOLD/BUY. With the injury to Mansour and slow-ish start meaning the first price rise wasn’t a huge one, Crichton remains a buy this week.

Those who already own him, sit back and enjoy the price rises!

George Jennings held his position despite cuts to the Eels’ backline.
George Jennings held his position despite cuts to the Eels’ backline.

George Jennings CTW (PAR | $226,700) - 29 points

Jennings held his spot in the Eels lineup and delivered a much needed $50k price rise for those that jumped on board last week. The 29 points without any attacking stats of note bodes well for the weeks he does actually find the try line, although the Eels in general aren’t doing that very often! The debut score of 63 has now gone from Jennings’ 3-game rolling average, so we need another 50+ score this weekend against the Sea Eagles. Having retained his place this week with the return of Hayne and Takairangi, there are now NO threats to his position! Hallelujah!

VERDICT: HOLD. The best possible scenario for SuperCoaches! Well done to those that took the plunge on his job security.

Peni Terepo FRF | 2RF (PAR | $311,100) - 57 points

That’s Niiiiiiiiceeee Pennnnniiiii. I boldy dubbed Terepo a buy last week on the back of a career 1.1PPM in over 80 NRL matches in the absence of Nathan Brown and likelihood of 50mins, and boy did he deliver! 57 points in 50 minutes with 29 tackles, a linebreak assist and 16 points in hit ups for a $51,500 price rise.

One of few shining lights in yet another disappointing loss for the Eels, Terepo has been named to start at lock this week - best case scenario is a 50 point average, coverage of the round 13 bye and at that point Terepo would be a $450k player.

VERDICT: BUY/HOLD. The ship has probably sailed but only 4% owned, BE of just 6, dual position and likely 45-55 point output Terepo presents as very similar to JFH two weeks ago.

Ken Sio CTW (NEW | $257,800) - 84 points

Sio has started the last two matches on the wing for the Knights after the season-ending ACL injury to Tautau Moga.

His 84 points on the weekend came through two tries, with three line breaks and 15 points in hit ups - so just beware when the tries aren’t there the scores may be much more like his first outing of 21points.

VERDICT: AVOID. Sio is not the worst option with a -23 BE that’s for sure,

but I still prefer Crichton or Jennings for cheaper.

Jaydn Su'a could be a trap this round.
Jaydn Su'a could be a trap this round.

Jaydn Su’a 2RF (BRO | $265,400) - 71 points

The news of Matt Gillett’s serious injury absence firmly placed Jaydn Su’a in cheapie calculations after first lockout last weekend, and those that jumped on expecting Su’a to play 80 minutes on that edge were wrong in that sense.

Sims started, but Su’a exceeded all scoring expectations with 71 points in 49 minutes scoring a try in the process.

VERDICT: HOLD. If you don’t own already, don’t be sucked in as Su’a has a below average work rate… so I would expect scores in the 30-35 range moving forward.

Lachlan Croker HFB | 5/8 (MNL | $246,400) - 49 points

Croker bounced back after last week’s concussion affected performance, scoring 49 points with a try assist, line break and overall just looking dangerous despite the thrashing the Sea Eagles copped at the hands of the Tigers.

The Sea Eagles come up against the out of form Eels this weekend and Croker will likely have a negative BE the following week against the Knights after the 17 leaves his rolling

average.

VERDICT: SELL/HOLD*. The asterisk is if you don’t buy into Ryley Jacks, Croker has merit as a hold until his round 13 bye coverage where he could be around $350k in a perfect world.

Jeremy Marshall-King looms as a sell candidate this weak.
Jeremy Marshall-King looms as a sell candidate this weak.

Jeremy Marshall-King 5/8 | HFB (BUL | $278,500) - 41 points

I don’t think even the most optimistic of Bulldogs’ fans would have expected to dominate the Cowboys in Townsville last weekend, and JMK certainly played his part.

Impressively, the 41 points came almost entirely in base stats with 29 tackles, a forced drop out and 9 points in hit ups.

VERDICT: HOLD/SELL. You could feasibly hold with a BE of just 13, but making some cash and selling to the popular cheapie of the week in Ryley Jacks has merit.

Bryce Cartwright 2RF | 5/8 (GCT | $282,500) - 9 points

Oh man. Just as we thought the #CartyParty had worked his way back to relevance, with a revenge game against his former club as motivation... he promptly gets sin-binned and dishes up yet another single-digit score halting any potential price rises, again!

VERDICT: HOLD/SELL. I’m holding for now, but I don’t blame ANYONE for wanting to sell as it’s been a horror show to this point.

Kurt Dillon FRF (SHA | $164,600) - 30 points

Dillon is 190cm tall, 107kg, and is very highly regarded. Having replaced the concussed James Segeyaro last week on the bench, we couldn’t in our wildest dreams have imagined Gallen, Fifita, Graham and Luke Lewis all going down injured in one week.

So, Dillon is looking at extended time in the side, and judging by his 30 points in 50 minutes he has the trust of the coaching staff.

Naturally the PPM will increase as his confidence does, so hopefully we have ourselves a bottom dollar cheapie next week!

VERDICT: WATCH. Don’t jump the gun, but a $164k FRF to bring in to our sides would be a sweet treat in a week’s time.

Braden Uele FRF (SHA | $177,300) - 0 points

Uele was in the Copes’ Crusaders first draft team way back in the pre season, as the 191cm, 115kg monster was touted as a future superstar of the NRL.

A bad concussion in the trials and slow start to the reserve grade season means he has had to bide his time, but with injury comes opportunity and believe me his skill set is built for SuperCoach!

VERDICT: WATCH. Both Dillon and Uele could present as MUST-have cheapies if they perform well given they would cover the round 13 bye week. Fingers crossed.

Mark Nicholls will see more price rises. Picture: Brett Costello
Mark Nicholls will see more price rises. Picture: Brett Costello

Mark Nicholls FRF | 2RF (STH | $226,000) - 38 points

Nicholls played yet another 43 minutes in the absence of Sam Burgess and Cam Murray, scoring 38 points and rising $17k in the process. But, the minutes may well dissolve this week with the big guns returning.

VERDICT: HOLD. The good performances the past two weeks means Nicholls has a -10 BE and even with diminished minutes has a couple of weeks of cash left.

Junior Tatola FRF (STH | $231,100) - 32 points

Tatola’s slow-burn continues as he notched his second consecutive 32-point game in 33 minutes and he was super close to a linebreak after bursting through the line but Ryan Matterson clung on to his jersey by a fingertip for about 6 metres.

I digress, the return of Sam Burgess and Cameron Murray will hurt Nicholls more than Tatola, expect his minutes and output to stay fairly stable.

VERDICT: HOLD. Plan to hold through to round 13 coverage and sell for around $280-$300k.

Sione Katoa will likely be a buy again soon.
Sione Katoa will likely be a buy again soon.

Sione Katoa CTW (CRO | $164,900) - 0 points

This is simply a reminder that Katoa is on the return from injury (he played very well in reserve grade for Newtown on the weekend) and should he win back a spot in the Sharks’ best 17, he will immediately become a buy! Reading the tea leaves from this week’s team selected, Dugan pushes to fullback, Moylan back to the halves, meaning Katoa could come in at centre or on the wing for Edrick Lee. Interesting.

VERDICT: WATCH team lists. With the likes of Kennar, Isaako, Sami and even Hiku topping out in price over the next few rounds, be ready to pounce.

Jack Cogger HFB (NEW | $208,600) - 0 points

Brock Lamb has been dropped, with Jack Cogger - the highly touted superstar junior half - his replacement.

Having played 8 matches in the past two seasons, Cogger hasn’t set the world alight (under 30PPG average), but this Knights team is much, much better offensively so hopefully Cogger can make some noise for us.

VERDICT: WATCH. Round 13 cheapie alert!

FINAL VERDICT

Players that surpass $300k will feature in this section with a summation of where they are at and what you should be looking to do in the future.

Ben Hampton FLB | 5/8 (NQC | $356,700) - 65 points

Hampton unexpectedly kept his place in the centres, scoring a try, increasing his workrate and base stats across the board and rising $68,800 this week alone.

Hampton still has a low BE of just 2, and numerous price rises still to come. With coverage of the round 13 bye, I would be doing my best to hold until then.

VERDICT: HOLD. Hampton is one of the surprise packets of 2018, that is for sure.

Adam Douehi CTW (STH | $250,800) - 0 points

Douehi didn’t leave the bench on Thursday night, with the one positive being that he didn’t LOSE money as a result. It’s over for SuperCoach, as bench utilities just cannot survive.

VERDICT: SELL.

Will Matthews 2RF | CTW (GCT | $218,400) - 23 points

Matthews actually lost $13k this week, scoring just 23 points in 56 minutes for a PPM of 0.4 - yuck. The dual position is handy, particularly if you’re a Ryan Matterson owner which may means he holds value even without making money, but that’s about where the positives finish.

VERDICT: AVOID/SELL.

WATCHLIST

All of these players were in contention, but we can cross these guys off our starting team lists, as they have either not been named/on extended bench, are injured or have a diminished role…

Taane Milne 2RF | CTW (WST | $192,800)

Zac Lomax CTW | FLB (STG | $164,600)

Mitch Cornish HFB | 5/8 (SYD | $192,800)

Hame Sele 2RF (STG | $212,400)

Payne Haas FRF (BRO | $164,600)

Greg Leleisiuao CTW (PAR | $164,600)

Kyle Flanagan HFB | 5/8 (SHA | $164,600)

Nat Butcher 2RF (SYD | $192,800)

Campbell Graham CTW (STH | $207,700)

Lindsay Collins FRF (SYD | $177,300)

Moses Leota FRF (PTH | $192,800)

Keegan Hipgrave FRF (GCT | $192,800)

* If players aren’t anywhere on the above lists it is because we deem them irrelevant at least for the time being.
