NRL SuperCoach: 20 SuperCoach winners, losers from Cowboys vs Titans, Raiders vs Eels

The big guns stood tall on a bumper Sunday with the Cowboys and Raiders picking up crucial wins. We look at the 20 SuperCoach NRL Winners and Losers from Sunday footy.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 5

Round five is in the books after a bumper Sunday of action with the Cowboys and Raiders recording crucial wins.

We saw a host of big SuperCoach scores as the outside backs turned it on, particularly for the Raiders with four of their speedy customers scoring 90 or more.

There were some big misfires too, with Clint Gutherson only polling 28 and Dylan Brown unable to crack the half century once again.

We take a look at the winners and losers from the Cowboys vs Titans and Raiders vs Eels.

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. James Schiller (108) - What more could you ask from a player under $240k. Huge effort.

2. Scott Drinkwater (139) - That’s more like it. Brilliant bounce back and a huge score.

3. Reece Robson (103) - Starting to enter the conversation of HOK1.

4. Matthew Timoko (125) - Breaks tackles like there’s no tomorrow. Justifies his price.

5. Ethan Strange (93) - Has been a valuable money maker for coaches this year.

6. Klese Haas (74) - Boosted by a try but great output from a cheapie.

7. Xavier Savage (90) - We saw just how dangerous he can be when given opportunities.

8. Brian Kelly (80) - Looked the goods and was rewarded with a nice score.

9. Beau Fermor (76) - His best SC performance of the year.

10. Morgan Smithies (64) - Continues on his consistency with another solid score.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Clint Gutherson (28) - Scores have been inconsistent of late and another down week.

2. Tom Dearden (24) - Big money player that didn’t trouble the scorer today.

3. Tom Starling (10) - It’s clear Danny Levi is Ricky Stuart’s preferred dummy half.

4. Jeremiah Nanai (25) - Another Cowboy that didn’t join the points party.

5. Junior Paulo (28) - Relegated to the bench and had minimal SC impact.

6. Kelma Tuilagi (9) - Only saw 13 minutes in a massive defeat.

7. Jack Gosiewski (17) - Big question marks over his minutes going forward.

8. Kieran Foran (16) - Went off with injury, when will he be back?

9. Dylan Brown (44) - Just doesn’t seem to be clicking in the halfback role for Parra.

10. Zac Laybutt (45) - Purely from a SC perspective, his injury news is devastating.

RAIDERS VS EELS

FULL-TIME – Raiders 41-8: What a statement performance from the Raiders.

After being put on notice by coach Ricky Stuart for their fade against the Sharks last weekend, they respond in style and never gave Parramatta a hope.

Where the Eels go to from here is a mystery – they weren’t able to generate any meaningful attack and didn’t look likely at any stage.

It’s no surprise that Canberra dominates the SuperCoach leaderboard with their outside backs having a field day.

TOP SUPERCOACH SCORES

1. Matthew Timoko 125

2. James Schiller 108

3. Ethan Strange 93

4. Xavier Savage 90

5. Hudson Young 79

6. Jamal Fogarty 72

7. Maika Sivo 71

8. J’maine Hopgood 65

9. Morgan Smithies 64

10. Joseph Tapine 55

73rd minute - Raiders 35-8: Just to rub a bit of salt into the wound, the Raiders take an easy penalty shot to extend the margin to 31.

James Schiller, Ethan Strange, Xavier Savage and Matthew Timoko are all a chance of hitting the century mark before the full-time siren sounds.

Maika Sivo scores his second try but it won’t bother Canberra.

63rd minute - Raiders 33-4: Stop the fight.

The Raiders go back-to-back with James Schiller picking up a try and Hudson Young scoring the very next set after Matthew Timoko gets through some poor attempts at tackle.

It’s a carve up in Canberra.

Schiller is still under $240k and has produced 87 points tonight, just one behind fellow stud cheapie Ethan Strange.

Xavier Savage is firing with 83 SC points of his own.

55th minute - Raiders 23-4: And just like that any hopes of a comeback look over.

The Raiders catch the Eels for pace out wide once again with Xavier Savage kicking inside for Danny Levi who pounces on the loose ball to score.

They’ve been clinical tonight and quickly punish the Eels.

Savage rises to 71 SC points while Ethan Strange continues to fire with 83.

51st minute - Raiders 17-4: It’s taken almost 50 minutes but the Eels are on the board.

A penalty gets them downfield and they finally trouble the scorers as Clint Gutherson throws a lovely cutout to Maika Sivo.

James Schiller has 53 points and Gutherson sits on 27. Ethan Strange still leads everyone with 71.

45th minute - Raiders 17-0: Matthew Timoko take a bow.

It was brilliant work from James Schiller to burn Maika Sivo for pace, but Timoko got past Gutherson and had an extraordinary put-down while fending off Dylan Brown to get the ball down before going into touch.

It’s another 70m try for the Raiders and they are destroying Parramatta.

HALFTIME – Raiders 13-0: It’s been all Canberra in the first half as Parramatta looks completely outclassed up to this point.

To put the icing on a great first half, Jamal Fogarty slots a field goal in the 40th minute to put them ahead by more than two scores.

They’ll need something drastic to turn the tide here, because at the moment their attack isn’t firing a shot at all.

The Raiders overcame the early loss of Jordan Rapana to assert their dominance.

TOP SUPERCOACH SCORES

1. Ethan Strange 71

2. Xavier Savage 48

3. Hudson Young 42

4. Morgan Smithies 38

5. Sebastian Kris 37

6. J’maine Hopgood 34

7. Ryan Matterson 34

8. Joseph Tapine 30

9. Reagan Campbell-Gillard

10. Jamal Fogarty 27

33rd minute - Raiders 12-0: Pure speed.

Xavier Savage burns off the Parramatta defence and steps Clint Gutherson in a one-on-one situation to run the best part of 70m and give the Raiders full control of this contest.

They’re looking good while the Eels are really struggling to keep up.

26th minute - Raiders 8-0: In an odd scenario, referee Adam Gee has communicated his thoughts with the Bunker after awarding a try to Parramatta.

He changed his tune and said he didn’t like it, with Clint Gutherson ruled to have knocked on in the lead-up to a Maika Sivo try.

It was the right decision but bizarre nonetheless.

J’maine Hopgood leads the Eels SuperCoach tally with 26 points.

17th minute - Raiders 8-0: An easy two points for the Raiders was on offer and they swiftly took it.

Jamal Fogarty converts the penalty shot to get the scoring underway.

Not long after the Raiders almost bombed the easiest of tries with a three on none. Hudson Young opted for a flick pass to Simi Sasagi.

He was tackled and passed inside to Sebastian Kris to score, despite the objections of Clint Gutherson who claimed it was forward.

Strange now has 36 SC points with Kris on 23. Reagan Campbell-Gillard is the best of the Eels with 17.

7th minute - 0-all: It’s a horror start for the Raiders with Jordan Rapana receiving treatment for a knee injury with his first run of the game.

The trainer has called for the sideline and he will be replaced by Simi Sasagi with Sebastian Kris moving to the fullback role.

Their woes were compounded with a try for James Schiller being denied for a forward pass in the lead-up.

6.10PM: There is one positional change for the Eels, but the same 17 players as named on Tuesday will remain for both sides.

Wiremu Greig (FRF $315,900) will start in the front row with Junior Paulo (FRF $569,100) coming off the interchange bench.

Kaeo Weekes comes in as the 18th man for the Raiders with Morgan Harper carrying that role for the Eels.

COWBOYS VS TITANS

FULL-TIME – Cowboys 35-22: They had to survive an almighty scare but the Cowboys shake off the Titans in Townsville.

A Chad Townsend field goal pushed the margin out beyond two converted tries over the closing stages to see them home and make up for his sin binning earlier in the half.

The loss leaves the Gold Coast anchored towards the bottom of the ladder as they still search for their first win.

TOP SUPERCOACH SCORES

1. Scott Drinkwater 139

2. Reece Robson 103

3. Brian Kelly 81

4. Valentine Holmes 77

5. Beau Fermor 76

6. Murray Taulagi 76

7. David Fifita 74

8. Klese Haas 73

9. Reuben Cotter 69

10. Kyle Feldt 60

71st minute - Cowboys 34-22: Kyle Feldt has the Cowboys tryscoring record and he just might’ve won them the game.

With the Cowboys under the pump he reads the play beautifully, picking off a pass from AJ Brimson to put a screeching halt to the Titans’ momentum.

Beau Fermor has 67 points now to sit second behind Brian Kelly for the Gold Coast (81).

68th minute - Cowboys 28-22: What is going on.

The Titans score again with the Cowboys completely imploding in defence.

A pass from Tanah Boyd put Beau Fermor into a huge gap and he linked well with Jojo Fifita for the second rower to score and get them back to within six.

65th minute - Cowboys 28-16: The Titans strike immediately.

A nice pass from Sam Verrills to Klese Haas catches the Cowboys napping with some weak goal line defence and they are right back in this game.

Haas has 45 SuperCoach points while Scott Drinkwater leads all scorers with 135.

61st minute - Cowboys 28-10: Chad Townsend is in the sin bin.

The Cowboys halfback was pinged for a hip drop on Jayden Campbell, but it didn’t appear to be a conventional one.

A penalty looked sufficient but the Bunker has had its say and he must go.

The rule is a mess at the moment.

60th minute - Cowboys 28-10: That’s much better from the Titans.

AJ Brimson steps Chad Townsend to bust the line and he finds Jayden Campbell backing up to keep their faint hopes of a comeback alive.

Sam McIntyre was left worse for wear from the kick-off and will come off for a HIA. That was a nasty collision.

Mo Fotuaika also comes from the field as a result of the tackle.

Brimson sits on 55 SC points with Campbell now on 37.

56th minute - Cowboys 28-4: The Drinkwater show continues.

This time he plays distributor, picking up a try assist for a nice short ball to Reece Robson who dives his way over and beats a few defenders along the way.

The Titans are showing little resistance here and have no answers for what the Cowboys are throwing at them.

Drinkwater’s century is now up to 134 points with Robson on 69.

55th minute - Cowboys 22-4: Scott Drinkwater is back in business.

He scores his second try of the afternoon after a beautiful set play sees Chad Townsend put him over.

His SuperCoach tally is up to 114 points with Townsend rising to 60.

52nd minute - Cowboys 16-4: The horrible injury news continues.

Kieran Foran has been ruled out for the game and Griffin Neame has gone down after buckling over in a tackle.

He gets to his feet and stays on however.

50th minute - Cowboys 16-4: There’s life in the Titans.

Brian Kelly scores an unconventional try after chaos in the play the ball, but the centre reaches out to touch down for their first points of the afternoon.

Kelly has been a shining light and now rises to 73 points.

45th minute - Cowboys 16-0: Horrible news for the Cowboys with Zac Laybutt’s injury a suspected ACL.

It’s a terrible blow for the centre who has enjoyed a solid start to 2024.

HALFTIME - Cowboys 16-0: Just as the Titans looked like they had scored on the stroke of halftime, they have been denied by the Bunker for an obstruction.

Everything that can go wrong is going wrong for the Titans.

In promising news Kieran Foran has returned to the bench so he could make a comeback in the second half.

But it was all North Queensland in the first 40 and they’re looking very dangerous.

TOP SUPERCOACH SCORES

1. Scott Drinkwater 73

2. Murray Taulagi 59

3. David Fifita 46

4. Zac Laybutt 45

5. Valentine Holmes 39

6. Chad Townsend 38

7. Reuben Cotter 37

8. Brian Kelly 36

9. Reece Robson 29

10. Jaimin Jolliffe 28

35th minute - Cowboys 16-0: Soft defence from the Titans.

Scott Drinkwater gets the ball one off the ruck inside the Gold Coast 10m line and scores with ease.

That is terrible from the Titans. Not good enough.

What isn’t terrible is Drinkwater’s SuperCoach score. He sits on 67 points.

30th minute - Cowboys 10-0: Not again.

The injury concerns continue with Kieran Foran clutching at an ankle after friendly fire.

He’s been taken off and replaced by Sam Verrills.

Foran had 16 points during his time on the field.

David Fifita has climbed to 42 in a strong showing while Scott Drinkwater has 37.

23rd minute - Cowboys 10-0: Injury concerns for the Cowboys with Zac Laybutt assisted from the field with what appears to be an ankle injury.

He’s sitting on 45 points currently but you’d think he’d be long odds to return.

Jason Taumalolo punched out 15 points before coming from the field in the 20th minute.

18th minute - Cowboys 10-0: A brilliant backline movement involving Scott Drinkwater and Valentine Holmes sees Murray Taulagi score in the corner.

Lovely quick hands from Holmes and a good catch from Taulagi are compounding the Titans’ problems.

Holmes sits on 32 points with Taulagi leading everyone on 45.

Kyle Feldt looked like he had an ankle complaint after a tackle but seems to be moving okay at the moment. He’s one to monitor.

David Fifita has 28 points now and is looking sharp.

8th minute - Cowboys 6-0: Scott Drinkwater coaches look away.

With the Titans’ first kick of the game the fullback lets the ball bounce, similar to what was happening last week.

The Cowboys strike first though with Zac Laybutt selling a dummy from close range and going over untouched.

Worrying signs from the Titans early with some lacklustre defence.

He shoots out to 34 points with Brian Kelly hitting 19 inside 10 minutes.

4.05PM: We are underway at Queensland Country Bank Stadium between the Cowboys and Titans.

Will North Queensland maintain its lofty ladder position or can the Gold Coast secure its first win of the season?

3.30PM: After consecutive below par weeks, 4851 SuperCoach players have traded out Zac Laybutt (CTW $477,700).

He made people take notice with a huge score in round one and will be desperate to show that wasn’t a flash in the pan.

Laybutt still remains in 13% of teams.

With a number of fullbacks like Tom Trbojevic and Kalyn Ponga scoring big in round five already, Scott Drinkwater (FLB $825,100) will be looking for a similar result.

With a score of 105 in round three and 77 last week while not at his best, it’s a good sign that he can rack up the points.

Beau Fermor (2RF $457,000) is the most popular player for the Titans among SuperCoaches in over 20,000 teams, and he needs a big score to repay their faith after averaging just 42 through the first four rounds.

If not he could find himself on the chopping block.

3PM: The Titans have made one change to their 17.

David Fifita (2RF $832,100) will start in the second row after being named on the bench on Tuesday, with Klese Haas shifting to lock and Erin Clark to the bench.

Alofiana Khan-Pereira has been dropped with Jojo Fifita coming onto the wing for the Titans.

Josiah Pahulu (FRF $204,300) comes onto the Gold Coast bench to make his NRL debut with 77 SuperCoaches bringing him into their squads for this round.

North Queensland keeps the same team that went down to the Broncos last Friday night with all eyes on Valentine Holmes (CTW $829,200).

More than 5000 SuperCoaches have traded him into their side and he is in 17% of teams, so they’ll be looking for him to ton up.

EARLIER: Des Hasler’s Titans remain the only winless side in the competition, with a growing casualty ward not doing them any favours when they host the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

No doubt Gold Coast will be on red alert for a Cowboys side coming of their first loss of the season.

POD WATCH

Scott Drinkwater ($851,800 – FLB) – despite a load of errors against Brisbane, Drinkwater still managed to score heavily (77) thanks to 200+ run metres and a try. The fullback is warming into this season, and with Titans team prone to leaking points, a monster score is a real possibility.

Gold Coast Titans casualty ward:

• Isaac Liu (concussion, Round 6)

• Keenan Palasia (quad, Round 8)

• Phil Sami (syndesmosis, Round 8)

• Tino Fa’asuamaleaui (knee, 2025 season)

North Queensland Cowboys casualty ward:

• Heilum Luki (ankle, Round 9)

• Jamayne Taunoa-Brown (Achilles, mid-season)

• Coen Hess (knee, 2025 season)
