NRL Early Mail round 1 2024: Predicted teams for opening round

The Dolphins have breathed a sigh of relief after new recruit Herbie Farnworth sent a scare through Redcliffe, after the recruit suffered a pre-season injury. See the latest team news here

Players to Target | NRL SuperCoach 101

The Dolphins are confident Herbie Farnworth has dodged a bullet after their star recruit limped from training on Tuesday

Less than 24 hours after Tom Gilbert was ruled out for the season with an ACL rupture, Farnworth sent a scare through Redcliffe after jarring his knee during a training session.

The England international looked to be in pain as he hobbled from the field and didn’t return to the session.

However Dolphins fitness staff cleared Farnworth of a serious injury and he will be monitored throughout the week.

The Dolphins are confident Farnworth will be on deck to launch their 2024 NRL Premiership campaign against the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium on March 10.

Dolphins prop Jarrod Wallace said the club was in a better position to cover the loss of players this year than in their foundation season.

“I didn’t even see he got injured. I’m sure he’ll be fine,” he said.

“He’s a bit of a princess after being named number one on the NRL’s hottest list.

“I’m sure he’ll put some ice on it and be back at training on Thursday.

“If something was to happen to him we’ve got Tesi (Niu), Jake Averillo. We have two weeks to be ready for round one.

“We’ve got five players ready in every position. That’s something every club needs and we lacked last year.”

While Farnworth is expected to be fit for the Cowboys blockbuster, the Dolphins will be without Queensland Origin representative Gilbert for the entire season.

The backrow enforcer was limited to 11 games last year before undergoing a shoulder reconstruction and now his second season with the Dolphins is over before it started.

The likes of Kenny Bromwich and Ray Stone are now in the mix for the No. 13 jersey and Wallace backed Gilbert to overcome his latest setback.

“He’s one of the most mentally strong, hardworking players I’ve ever seen,” he said.

“It’s going to be soul crushing for a week or so but he’ll be back and ready to go next year. The boys will be keeping him up.

“That’s the rough part of our game we play. We all know it can happen to anyone.”

MANLY TO NAME NEW RECRUITS

Jaxson Paulo and Nathan Brown are set to join Luke Brooks in making their premiership debuts for Manly under the bright lights in Las Vegas.

Brooks was always destined to start in the halves alongside Daly Cherry-Evans against South Sydney at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday afternoon (AEDT) but the selections of Paulo and Brown were less clear cut.

Paulo, a former Rabbitoh who played 43 games for Souths and scored 19 tries over three seasons, looks to have won the wing spot opposite Jason Saab while Brown – having recently been upgraded to a top 30 contract – is expected to take his place on the interchange bench.

As revealed in this masthead last week, the youngest of the Trbojevic brothers – Ben – will start in the second row in place of the injured Josh Schuster, who stayed in Sydney to work on his recover from a calf problem.

The Sea Eagles have been in Las Vegas since late last week and trained at the UFC performance centre on Monday afternoon local time.

PANTHERS STAR SUSPENDED FOR ROUND 1

Penrith premiership winning hooker Mitch Kenny will miss the Panthers’ start to the season after being suspended for a “couple Boxing Day lines” social media post.

Kenny was allowed to play in Penrith’s World Club Challenge loss to Wigan last weekend however the NRL have imposed a one game ban and a $10,000 fine for the post-Christmas post. It means Kenny will miss Penrith’s first match of the season against the Storm next Friday.

Half of his $10,000 fine is suspended for 12 months. The Panthers successfully asked the NRL to impose the ban during the season instead of the dummy half missing the game in England.

Kenny was hit with a breach notice earlier this month after the NRL’s integrity unit investigated his post.

“Couple Boxing Day lines have got me in trouble,” the post read on Kenny’s Instagram account along with a selfie. Kenny had tried to distance himself from the post.

“Happy New Year guys. Enjoy and ignore trolls who grabbed my phone. Happy New Year,” he later wrote on his page.

In October last year, North Queensland star Valentine Holmes was whacked with a $25,000 fine and rubbed out of the Kangaroos’ first Test of the Pacific Championships after posting a photo to his social media of him holding a bag of white powder.

Luke Sommerton and Soni Luke spent time at dummy half last year in Kenny’s absence. Kenny will be right to play for Penrith in their round two game against arch rivals Parramatta.

While Kenny is unavailable for the Panthers, outside back Taylan May has been given the green light to play in round one with the NRL deeming him to have served his two game ban while injured.

May had a two-game ban hanging over his head last year but was injured before the start of the season.

STORM ROOKIE GIVES BELLYACHE A HEADACHE

Joe Chan has vowed to go hard if he forces his way into the Melbourne Storm side for their season opener against Penrith after leaving coach Craig Bellamy with a genuine headache as he prepares to name his side to take on the premiers.

Chan, the son of former Storm forward Alex Chan, made one appearance last season after joining Melbourne from French club Catalans. If his form against Newcastle in Fiji last weekend is any guide, Chan is set to significantly add to his appearances in 2024.

Eli Katoa will be one fixture in the Storm back row but the remaining places appear wide open.

Shawn Blore, recruited from the Wests Tigers, has struggled in the pre-season for fitness after suffering a series of niggling injuries.

Another back rower Trent Loiero took an early mark last weekend after suffering an injury scare, leaving the door for Chan. He ran through it last weekend.

KEY DRAGONS SET FOR ROUND ONE

St George Illawarra have received a round one boost after scans cleared forward Blake Lawrie and hooker Jacob Liddle of serious injury on Monday.

Lawrie is expected to be available for the season opener against the Gold Coast Titans after suffering a rib cartilage injury in Saturday’s trial against the Tigers.

Like Lawrie, Liddle failed to finish the second trial after picking up a hamstring complaint.

Scans revealed Liddle suffered a low-grade hamstring strain and is aiming for a round one return.

ROOSTERS RECRUIT AVOIDS SURGERY

Sydney Roosters star Dom Young has avoided neck surgery but still won’t play the club’s historic game in Las Vegas.

Young has flown to Los Angeles with the team and resumed training after sustaining a neck injury in a trial against Manly.

He was wearing a red bib – ensuring no contact – during training at UCLA on Saturday.

He has also been completing neck injury exercises.

He should be available for the club’s round two game against Manly at Brookvale.

WINNER DECLARED IN CANBERRA FULLBACK RACE

Jordan Rapana has won the battle for the Canberra fullback spot.

Coach Ricky Stuart has opted for experience in the position despite a strong push from young gun Chevy Stewart.

The Raiders have a tough away trip in round one against the Knights.

Sebastian Kris played all but three of his games at fullback last year but will play centre when he returns from suspension in round two, with Rapana to stay at fullback.

Stewart is highly-rated at the club but won’t feature over the opening rounds.

Jaxson Paulo nabbed the wing spot ahead of Raymond Tuaimalo-Vaega, with Reuben Garrick shifting to centre this season.

Shawn Blore, Kane Bradley and Jack Howarth are battling to start on the edge.

Tom Gilbert suffered a devastating ACL injury that will see him miss the 2024 season.
