DRAGONS ace Gareth Widdop has avoided surgery on a dislocated shoulder.

The club is hopeful he will play again this season.

“St George Illawarra skipper Gareth Widdop suffered a dislocated shoulder in the Dragons’ loss to the Parramatta Eels over the weekend,” the club said in a statement.

“The initial scans of Widdop’s shoulder have been positive and indicate non-operative management at this point in time.

“Widdop’s rate of progress through the early stages of rehab will dictate his trajectory to return to play.”

The Dragons are already without Paul Vaughan (ankle), who is set to sit out until the start of the finals, while veteran winger Jason Nightingale (neck/shoulder) is also expected to miss another week.

Meanwhile, the Storm fear Ryan Hoffman has played his last game after suffering a serious hamstring injury against the Sharks on Sunday.

“We’re all concerned, he’s in tears in the dressing room,” Storm coach Craig Bellamy said. “I’m not too sure he will play again, to be quite honest.”

The former NSW and Australian player has announced his retirement at the end of the year.

In other injury news from round 22:

* Penrith great Brad Fittler has urged Panthers caretaker coach Cameron Ciraldo to rest wounded playmaker James Maloney or risk throwing away their NRL premiership chance. Maloney finished the game against the Titans but weill go for scans on a knee injury. He is also battling ongoing toe and thumb injuries.

“You look through those injuries, he’s 85kg max,” Fittler told the Sunday Footy Show. “The job he’s got to do, he’s looking sore and I think if they don’t give him a rest, they’re taking any chance away of going deep into the semi-finals.

James Maloney may be rested.

* South Sydney’s Alex Johnston (hamstring) will miss 2-3 weeks after going down on his first touch against the Roosters. The Rabbitohs also lost Campbell Graham (wrist) pre-game, but hope to be boosted by the return of Greg Inglis (broken thumb), who resumes full training on Tuesday.

* Cronulla’s Wade Graham (knee) failed a fitness test just after half time and didn’t return, while Josh Dugan (concussion) stumbled off for a HIA in the final moments.

* Star Rooster James Tedesco (concussion) left the field with 12 minutes to go and didn’t have time to return. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (ribs) is out for a month.

* Brian Kelly (ankle) and Kelepi Tanginoa (concussion) failed to finish for the Sea Eagles.

* Gold Coast’s Michael Gordon (wrist dislocation) and Brenko Lee (hamstring), Parramatta’s Tim Mannah (broken hand), Canberra’s Aidan Sezer (hamstring), Penrith’s James Tamou (leg) and Canterbury’s Lachlan Lewis (family matter) were all pre-game withdrawals.

* At the judiciary, North Queensland’s Jason Taumaolo (shoulder charge) has copped a week for a hit on Jamayne Isaako. Penrith’s Jack Hetherington (high tackle) has taken two weeks for a hit on Gold Coast’s AJ Brimson. Te Marie Martin and Tevita Pangai Jnr (both dangerous contact) can escapes bans with early guilty pleas.
