NRL casualty ward Round 19: All the weekend injuries

The Roosters’ push for back-to-back NRL premierships has hit a hurdle, while the Warriors face losing star back-rower Tohu Harris for the remainder of the year.

The Roosters’ push for back-to-back NRL premierships has hit a hurdle with the Bondi club set to be without six players for next round.

Key forwards Boyd Cordner and Siosiua Taukeiaho suffered calf injuries in Sunday’s 20-12 win over the Bulldogs.

Coach Trent Robinson said Cordner’s injury “won’t be long but is enough to annoy us for a couple of weeks”.

Kiwi Test forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is set to miss one match after being cited for dangerous contact for a late hit on Canterbury playmaker Jack Cogger.

Wing recruit Ryan Hall suffered a patella (knee cap) injury during training last week and is set to miss 2-3 weeks.

Boom young forward Nat Butcher was rested from Sunday’s game due to broken ribs he’d been playing with for a month.

Jake Friend (forearm fracture) is unlikely to return before the finals after going down against the Knights in Round 18.

“Siua and Boyd are both very similar, both calf [injuries],” Robinson said.

“All I know is that they didn’t get the shot gun where they couldn’t carry on.

“Siua carried on for a couple of plays, although limping a lot but it wasn’t the one where you’re going ‘I can’t move’ which can often be the case in a calf so that’s a positive sign for both of them.

“We’ve rested Nat Butcher today, he’s had a broken rib for four weeks, playing with a broken rib.

“With Zane [Tetevano] and Isaac [Liu] coming back, [Butcher’s] been playing very well but been playing tough, so that was an opportunity to get him repaired.”

Star Kiwi back-rower Tohu Harris could miss the remainder of the season in a huge blow for the Warriors’ finals aspirations.

Harris’ recovery from a foot stress fracture has progressed slower than expected, halting any immediate plans to return to action.

Michael Chee Kam has been cleared of serious injury after a traumatic collision which resulted in Kalyn Ponga being sin binned.

Chee Kam was caught between two Knights players whilst chasing a kick and suffered blows to his head from Ponga’s shoulder and then again as his head hit the ground. Players around were clearly concerned for Chee Kam’s wellbeing immediately, and he was promptly stretchered off the field with head/neck concerns.

After being taken to hospital as a precaution for further assessment he was thankfully cleared of any serious injury and discharged from hospital the following day. He will still be monitored over the coming week after clearly suffering a concussion, and will have to pass through the NRL’s concussion protocol before returning to play.

He would be in some doubt for Round 20 with the Tigers having a short turnaround to their next game on Thursday night.

Jesse Bromwich left the field at the completion of regular time in the Storm’s Golden Point loss to the Sea Eagles after suffering a sternum injury. Bromwich initially suffered the injury during the second half and looked to be leaving the field in significant pain, but was able to have thick padding strapped to his chest and continue.

Sternum injuries are similar to rib injuries in that they are some of the most painful, often hurting with every twist and turn. However as long as there is no fracture present it is often considered a pain tolerance issue, with many players able to use pain killing injections and a chest guard/padding to return within 1-3 weeks.

If Bromwich is unlucky enough to have suffered a fracture the recovery time usually extends out to 4-6 weeks to allow for adequate bone healing.

Dale Copley suffered a reported hamstring injury after hyperextending his left knee. Knee hyperextension isn’t the most common mechanism of injury for hamstring strains, with most occurring during sprinting movements.

Hamstring strains suffered during the sudden stretch that occurs when the knee hyperextends (more commonly referred to as a stretch strain) tend to have slightly longer recovery times. Copley is facing at least two weeks on the sideline, and with only six weeks left in the season a moderate or severe strain would likely be season ending.

Alex Glenn sat out the second half of the Broncos victory after suffering a minor groin strain. Injuries of this nature rarely require an extended recovery, but it is common for the symptoms to linger or re-aggravate. Still most allow a return in 1-3 weeks.

Blake Ferguson’s return to the field is extremely tough to predict after he suffered a reaction to antibiotics used to treat a knee infection. Ferguson was still in hospital over the weekend with some medical concern during the week for his kidneys. The Eels are hopeful of having him back on the field before finals, but infections and adverse reactions to medication must be treated with the utmost caution. Best case would likely see Ferguson return over the next 3-4 weeks.

Phillip Sami (Titans) and Christian Welch (Storm) will both enter the NRL’s concussion protocol after failing HIAs in their respective games yesterday. After suffering a head knock during the 1st half Sami self-reported concussion symptoms at half time.
