The Canberra Raiders have pulled off a huge upset to beat the Melbourne Storm 20-16 on Sunday afternoon.

The round 18 clash was a hard-fought battle as both sides scored an early try before Melbourne fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen was taken from the field after suffering a suspected fractured kneecap.

The 24-year-old was unable to put any weight on his right leg and was later taken to hospital — he is expected to undergo surgery on Monday.

Cameron Munster was superb early for the Storm after a week off with Covid and had a major role to play in the Storm’s first try, which came on the back of a Kenny Bromwich offload to Nick Meaney, who scored in the corner.

Despite the Storm taking the lead, it was the Green Machine that was firing on all cylinders in the first half, taking a 14-6 lead into the break.

Harry Grant then scored for the Storm before Raiders winger James Schiller produced a piece of individual brilliance to steal the win for his team.

After receiving the ball on the right edge on the last tackle, Schiller grubbered the ball along the sideline, ran around a defender to collect it and somehow managed to plant it just inside the dead ball line for a try.

Viewers were left stunned by Schiller’s athletic four-pointer.

Fox League commentator Warren Smith said: “It’s tremendous. What a heads-up play by James Schiller!”

Michael Ennis added: “His ability to put the grubber in then get both feet back into the in goal. He goes on the outside of the corner post out of the field of play and then gets both feet into the field of play.

“This is miraculous, that’s a miracle!

“He didn’t know whether to look for a pass, whether to kick back in field. In the end he backed himself and that is absolutely brilliant from Schiller.”

The Raiders held on to claim an memorable upset win to climb to 10th on the ladder, just two points outside the top eight.

They snapped a five-game losing streak to the Storm, but continued their joy at the Melbourne venue, making it four straight wins at AAMI Park.

It wasn’t exactly do or die for the Raiders — but they played the game like it was with their desperation in defence a key feature of their win.

Importantly, the Raiders kept in touch with the top eight on the back of a victory inspired by a stellar second half performance by Jack Wighton and the consistency of Adam Elliott, who fronted up in attack and defence.

Their attack was humming on the back of the productivity of Sebastian Kris, Joseph Tapine and Elliott, while the kicking of Jamal Fogarty, Wighton and Zac Woolford was on song.

The Raiders defence was full of spice too, denying the Storm close to the line on multiple occasions.

It’s the first time Melbourne has lost three games in a row since 2015 and the Storm sit fourth on the ladder, equal on 24 points with North Queensland and Parramatta.
