The man who brought Sam Burgess to the NRL, Souths co-owner Russell Crowe, has lauded the big Englishman’s contribution to the club.

Sam Burgess forced into NRL retirement

South Sydney co-owner and Hollywood star Russell Crowe has paid retiring Sam Burgess a stunning tribute, declaring: “You’re a hero who left us in awe.”

Burgess has stunned rugby league by retiring at age 30 through a chronic shoulder injury.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph from US east coast, Crowe said: “Sam Burgess has carved his name deep in the history of South Sydney.

“Week in week out during the entire time he has been with the Rabbitohs, Sam has led by example and instilled belief in the players around him.

“When I talked to Sam as a young 20-year-old, itching to make his mark in the NRL, we agreed he was coming to Australia with one mission: To help break South Sydney’s premiership drought.

“He achieved that in circumstances that left the rugby league world in awe.

“I’m quite sure anyone who witnessed the grand final on October 5, 2014, will never forget the heroism and determination on display.

“This transition into retirement for Sam has come a lot earlier than we had expected and planned around.”

In a club statement, Burgess made special mention of Crowe, the pair being great mates.

“To Russell - for making all this happen initially - I’ll be forever indebted to you. Your passion is infectious,” Burgess said.

South Sydney halfback legend Craig Coleman also offered amazing words about Burgess.

“One of the greatest to ever wear the famous red and green,” Coleman said.

“I was very lucky to grow up during our golden era with (John) Sattler, (John) O’Neill, (Ron) Coote, (Bob) McCarthy.

“Sam’s name will certainly be spoken about in the same way those legends are. Thanks Sam, I’ve loved every minute watching you play.”

Canberra and English star John Bateman joined the chorus of applause for Burgess.

Bateman posted on social media: “As a young English kid growing all I wanted to do was be like you.

“Then I got the chance to meet and become friends with you and to play alongside you, which was a dream come true.

“You’re an inspiration to every rugby league player in the game. Enjoy your retirement you legend.”

Former Souths teammate Dean Widders added: “Sam Burgess, legend. I loved watching this guy play. Thanks for the grand final win.”
