THE bad news for Ryan Carr — better known as the ‘bogan’ hunter — is Paul Gallen was back in the gym on Saturday.
Less than 24 hours after out-boxing Canberra prop Junior Paulo, Gallen was already thinking about one thing — knocking out Carr on December 23 at Shark Park.
“And there’s only one reason I want to knock him out — because of what he said about the Sutherland Shire community,’’ a fired-up Gallen said.
“I don’t really mind what people think of me. But when someone like him disrespects this area, the people, my friends and family, everyone who has helped and supported me throughout my career, he better know what he’s walking into.’’
It was Carr, who has won five of his eight career fights by knockout, that declared the Shire a “bogan suburb” and Gallen, their chief.
“The Sharks brought the premiership trophy home to the Shire for the first time and if all goes to plan, they can watch a disrespectful big mouth be taught a boxing lesson for the first time,’’ Gallen said.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ III: Saint, sinner, shoosh
Gallen headlines the fight night at his beloved Shark Park, his last before resuming 2017 pre-season training, with Ryan Waters, rising star Jack Brubaker, Renee Gartner, NSW heavyweight champion Jai Opetaia and a host of local footy club players also on the huge 16-fight card.

Backflip and early farewell to Grant
JOHN Grant has offered to stand down as ARL Commission chairman at the end of next season as part of compromise talks with NRL club bosses. The clubs (except the NRL-owned Titans and Knights) have voted to dump Grant at an emergency general meeting on December 20. Grant recently said he would remain chairman for another five years but has agreed to go in 12 months once the constitution is changed in a move to get the clubs back to the negotiating table. We’re also hearing there will be another gigantic backflip and the clubs will get the cash they were originally promised.
Matty support strong
CHANNEL Nine’s rugby league boss Matty Callander is facing his second bout of brain cancer surgery in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital tomorrow. According to his dad, racing legend Kenny Callander, Matty has been blown away by all the support over the past six months. “Channel Nine, the NRL and Fox Sports have been unbelievably supportive,” Kenny said. “Matt is overwhelmed by all the messages and all the support. It means a lot to him.”
Buckets of laughter
FORMER Balmain Tigers front-rower Kerry “Buckets” Hemsley was a rugby league cult hero back in the 1980s with his big ginger moustache, long wavy mullet and a colourful personality. Now aged 56, Buckets still has the big fan club judging by his performance on the cruise ship Pacific Pearl last weekend. As part of the entertainment, guests were invited to take part in a stand-up comedy session that was judged by the on-board guest comedians who handed out scores on each performance. Buckets won the competition and was apparently an absolute scream.
