NRL: Pioneering rugby league broadcasting great Barry Ross has died

The sidekick of Rex Mossop and the game’s first sideline eye, 1970s and 80s broadcaster Barry Ross has passed away.

Rex Mossop’s trusty sidekick when Channel 7 covered rugby league, Barry Ross, has died.

Ross, a well-known media identity, was essentially the game’s first sideline eye during Mossop’s reign as head caller during the 1970s and ’80s.

“Barry was one of the great figures of league broadcasting through his partnership with Rex Mossop,” said ARLC chairman, Peter V’landys.

“He contributed to the Men of League Foundation, now (known as) Family of League. In particular, he was a tower of strength to former players, especially ones that became sick or needed help.

“I know Barry’s family was thankful that he was able to watch the broadcast of the grand final on Sunday.

“He was synonymous with some great rugby league grand finals, and he was able to see one of the best of all time.

“He also tipped the Panthers, I’m told.

“The Australian Rugby League Commission extends its deepest condolences to wife Susan, two sons David and Nathan, and grandchildren Charlie and Ivy.”

Mossop and Ross enjoyed spirited banter together during commentary.

An NRL statement read: “Through his time in broadcasting, Ross and Mossop commentated on many memorable matches together including the first ever State of Origin in 1980 as well as grand finals.”

Mossop died in June, 2011.
