NRL news: Luke Keary hopes Josh Morris’ Roosters move brings another premiership

The arrival of Brett Morris helped the Roosters win a premiership in 2019, and now Luke Keary is backing the arrival of Josh Morris to have a similar impact.

Sydney Roosters playmaker Luke Keary already has three NRL premiership rings and he reckons new recruit Josh Morris can help make it one more.

After over a month of secret talks the Cronulla Sharks finally agreed to release Morris to the Bondi club where he will link up with twin brother, Brett.

Winger Brett joined the Roosters last year from Canterbury and was a vital part of the Bondi club’s premiership-winning campaign.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph at Kayo’s NRL Season Launch, Keary said he was expecting Morris’s arrival to have a similar impact in season 2020.

“[I’m expecting] the same, hopefully he [Josh] wins us another one,” Keary said with a laugh.

“We got Brett last year and seen what that did for us so it’s exciting to get Josh. They have both been playing for over a decade. I can’t remember them having a bad year or going through bad patches, that’s why they have played for New South Wales and Australia.”

Morris is expected to step into the left centre vacancy left when Latrell Mitchell switched allegiances to arch rivals, South Sydney. Fittingly, Morris’ first game in the Tricolours will be against Mitchell and the Rabbitohs in round three.

“He’s going to be playing on my side too so I’m keen to get him in there. I hope he doesn’t get injured [before round three],” Keary said.

On Wednesday, the veteran centre said he was relieved to have the contract saga resolved and to be joining the back-to-back premiers.

“It’s a bit of relief. Obviously there has been a bit of stuff came out in the past month or so. It’s good to have an end date,” Morris said.

“I am here for two weeks and I am going to give the best account of myself as possible.

“I want to set them up for a good start to the season and if I am doing my job well hopefully we can get a couple of wins.”

Morris’ release from Cronulla to the Roosters was only granted after both clubs came to an agreement on the terms of the deal. The Tricolours will have to pay the Shire club a transfer fee and allow the Sharks to negotiate with rising forward Poasa Faamausili. Faamausili has played 13 games over the last two years at Bondi and is contracted until the end of season 2020.

Forward Angus Crichton was named at centre for the Roosters’ round one clash against Penrith at Panthers Stadium on Saturday afternoon and it’s expected he will play there until Morris joins the side in two weeks.

“He came into his own on the weekend so he will be looking to lock down that right backrow spot. He played a bit in the middle last year which he enjoyed to so I’m not sure how that will work but he has been training a little on the left and a little on the right. He’ll find his spot. He was really good for us at the back end of last year when he had to change into the centre position over the last four or five weeks. It will be good to see him go back to what he wants to do.
