NRL lose it over Broncos’ ‘ridiculous’ matchwinning flick pass

A piece of pure madness has seen the Broncos hand the Knights a heartbreaker at Suncorp Stadium in a moment that has to be seen to be believed.

The Brisbane Broncos have snatched a last-gasp 24-20 win over the Newcastle Knights on the back of a freakish moment of brilliance.

The Knights had led 20-12 with 12 minutes left in the game before the Broncos struck back through Brandon Piakura.

But it was the matchwinner that will go down on highlight reels for years to come.

There were four minutes left in the match when Kobe Hetherington got an offload to halfback Adam Reynolds, who found his five-eighth Ezra Mam in support.

But clearly going to get chased down from behind, Mam threw an audacious flick pass to find Reynolds to score.

“Oh boy, what a try,” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

“Reynolds and Mam — yes Mam! Reynolds scores and the Broncos have the lead.”

“That is ridiculous.”

Shane Flanagan added: “That is just class, class, class.

“That’s silky, that is beautiful stuff, Ezra Mam.”

The Broncos then defended a late surge from the Knights, including a penalty after the full-time siren.

But it wasn’t enough for the Knights as the Broncos held on for the win.

Post-match, Mam laughed off the moment.

“I knew my little legs couldn’t make it so I just gave it to the other guy with the little legs,” he said on Fox League.

His partner in crime Reynolds was asked about his chemistry with Mam and joked that he was simply “chasing the young fella around the field”.

He added the Broncos “got out of jail tonight”.

When the inevitable question came up about Origin game two where he is seen as one of three halfback options along with the Eels’ Mitchell Moses and Sharks’ Nicho Hynes, Reynolds brushed it off.

“I”m not even thinking about that mate,” Reynolds said. “God a job to do here at the Broncos, if I get selected I’ll put my hand up.

“But I’d love to come up here in a Blue jersey. It’d be fantastic to run out at Suncorp with the game on the line. But it’s up to Freddy and the selectors which way they want to go. Either way I’ll be support NSW.”
