The NRL has issued Canberra’s Curtis Scott with a breach notice and fine, alleging he “brought the game into disrepute” and breached the league’s alcohol consumption policies.

The notice is in relation to Scott’s drunken behaviour on Australia Day, which saw him fall asleep under a tree in Moore Park, Sydney.

Scott was drawn into a nine-month legal battle and successfully had his charges dropped, with the heavy-handed arrest carried out by NSW Police playing a key role in court.

But the NRL on Saturday issued a notice to Scott that included a $15,000 sanction.

However the league stressed the entire fine can be suspended, should Scott successfully complete an education and counselling program implemented by the NRL’s wellbeing and education department.

In a statement, the NRL said part of program would focus on gaining “a better understanding of the risks of excessive alcohol use”.

Scott has five working days to respond to the breach notice.

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said the game expected a higher standard of behaviour from its players.

“Our players are role models in the community and must set an example for young people who look up to them,’’ Abdo said in a statement.

“In our view, Curtis should not have placed himself in a position where he was found in the state that he was in. That sort of behaviour is not acceptable and impacts on the reputation of our game and our brand.”
