It’s the banner that will break the hearts of South Sydney fans, who still haven’t forgotten the magic Adam Reynolds brought to Redfern.

Reynolds, 33, has been the mastermind behind Brisbane’s surge into Sunday’s grand final with one Broncos fan happy to publicly taunt Souths, who watched their gun halfback walk out for Brisbane two years ago.

After Brisbane’s win over the Warriors in Saturday night’s preliminary final, the fan’s painted sign simply read: THANKS SOUTHS.

They are 12 letters in the Broncos’ maroon and gold which will torment Rabbitohs’ supporters.

“I don’t want to bag Souths but that decision now doesn’t look really good. It looks a bad decision,” said South Sydney legend, Bob McCarthy.

“I wasn’t on the board so I don’t know what transpired. It’s sad.

“I think it’s the best I have ever seen Adam play. I think he’s in career-best form, easily.

“Adam is transformed. He is the king up there.

“At Souths, he was one of about four or five kings but up there he is the ‘Wally Lewis’, the king.”

Reynolds played 231 games for Souths, amassing 1896 points with a winning success rate of 63.6 per cent.

His greatest moment came when inspiring Souths to their famous 2014 grand final, breaking the club’s 43-year drought.

Now Souths fans will watch on enviously as Reynolds attempts to win his second premiership.

“He is the orchestra conductor, he gives all the orders and they all do what he says,” McCarthy said.

“Adam is running riot with that backline up there and all that speed. And I don’t think he can believe his luck having those three tough forwards – Tom Flegler, Payne Haas and Pat Carrigan - in the middle.

“They are as good as any three that have been around. They will match Penrith but the pressure of a grand final can stop a lot of people.

“At Souths, Adam had great players around him like Greg (Inglis) and Sam (Burgess). Now, up there, he oversees everyone. He is the main director and all those young kids are lapping it up.

“They all have so much speed and strength.

“It’s going to be a good grand final. I don’t think Penrith is as across the line as people think but they have been there before and they know how to handle it.

“I don’t care who it is – grand finals are very tough.”

Reynolds will mark-up on Penrith’s Nathan Cleary, the pair having gone head-to-head back in the 2021 grand final.
