Superstar Latrell Mitchell will get a premiership ring if the South Sydney Rabbitohs win the grand final despite him missing the decider through suspension.

All up Latrell has missed eight games of football this year in two foul-play bans but the Rabbitohs have made the decision to award the precious memento to the champion fullback if they knock over the Panthers.

The South Sydney and NSW Blues star already has two premiership rings from his back-to-back titles with the Sydney Roosters.

The NRL will give the winning club 20 sapphire and diamond rings set in solid white gold from Affinity jewellers for the players and coaching staff.

The Rabbitohs will purchase at least another dozen rings, valued at $5000 each, to hand out to players who didn’t make the team should they win the grand final.

It is a reward for all those who have been inside the team bubble and for the sacrifices they have made since the competition was relocated to southeast Queensland 11 weeks ago.

Despite the crushing disappointment at missing out on the finals series, Latrell has been an integral part of the Rabbitohs squad and preparation each week.

He vowed to stay with the team and mentor rookie fullback Blake Taaffe rather than return home to his farm in Taree, where he spends every off-season.

Asked what his role had been while suspended, Mitchell told NITV last week: “Just being around training and getting the younger fellas ready.

“I want them to go into this game knowing they have done everything possible and I’ve done everything in my power to get these boys ready to be able to perform on Sunday.”

Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has been involved in the design this year. It has blue sapphires and white diamonds, and is similar to a chequered band in traditional police colours.

“To be recognised through the NRL premiership ring as a part of history is a reflection on all of the hard work police officers have done, not just during Covid but with all the challenges of policing,” the commissioner said.
