Kylie Hilder under pressure as NSW fans call for change in wake of Blues’ State of Origin defeat

The Sky Blues went within a field goal of winning the State of Origin series in game two, but a flat performance in the historic decider has led to calls for a NSW overhaul.

NSW fans are already calling for a mass turnover next season after a dismal 22-6 loss to Queensland in the Women’s State of Origin decider on Thursday night.

The Sky Blues went within a field goal of winning the series in game two, but blew their game one advantage to be comprehensively outplayed by the Maroons in a historic decider in Townsville.

It was a stunning comeback for the Maroons that could have huge consequences for the Sky Blues in 2025.

The capitulation has angered fans, who have taken to social media to vent their frustrations at the poor performance evidenced by a shocking 59 per cent completion rate in another rain-affected game.

While the Maroons handled the conditions, NSW came up tactically short in the weather two games in a row.

Coach Kylie Hilder was already under pressure coming into the series but a third loss in four series could force NSWRL into a change for next year.

Halves Rachael Pearson and Corban Baxter were on fire in game one, but their incumbency will also come under the microscope after poor performances on Thursday night.

Two-time premiership winning halfback Jesse Southwell was snubbed for selection this year, while Kirra Dibb, who won an NRLW title with the Knights in 2022 was an unused squad member.

Fullback Emma Tonegato will also face some heat after a tough game in the decider, with three errors, a penalty and just 39 running metres.

St George Illawarra fullback Teagan Berry is nipping at her heels and is on the verge of higher honours with another big NRLW season looming.

More talent is emerging too.

Just last week the NSW under-19s women flogged Queensland 46-4 at Leichhardt Oval to show the next generation of players have arrived.

If they haven’t already, those players will begin to trickle into the NRLW this season, which kicks off on July 25.
