Newcastle’s season from hell has taken a scary turn, with the club’s captain expected to be ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Kalyn Ponga says he will see a specialist before a final call is made on whether his season is over after suffering his third concussion in six weeks.

The Knights will do everything possible to make sure Ponga’s long-term health is the priority and he has been booked in to see an independent neurologist in the coming days.

Speaking on Sunday Night with Matty Johns, Ponga was asked if his season was over.

“I’m not really too sure ... I’m guided by what the specialist says,” Ponga said.

“It’s an unfortunate thing, you can’t really do physio on your brain or anything like that. It’s just sort of time away from the game. Again, I’ll just find out what the specialist says and go from there.”

Without the star fullback, the Knights are really going to be in for a long end to the season, and their fans have every right to be frustrated after another year goes down the drain.

For eight years now arguably the most loyal fans in rugby league have been tolerating this so called rebuild.

It started way back when Rick Stone took over from Wayne Bennett, and followed through Nathan Brown and now Adam O’Brien who is in his third season.

But as if another rotten season wasn’t bad enough, now Andrew Johns, who is on the Knights coaching staff, conceded on the Sunday Footy Show: “I think it is pretty obvious there sort of needs to be a clean out of the roster”.

Seriously, it’s bloody sad for what used to be a proud rugby league heartland.
