Queensland star Kalyn Ponga is in doubt for the State of Origin decider after suffering a foot injury on Friday night.
In a potentially massive blow for the Maroons and Newcastle, the Knights captain left the field in pain in the 60th minute against the Raiders at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Ponga was immediately ruled out of the match after being assessed by the Knights medical staff.
“All I know is it’s a foot injury and the doctor has told me he will need to go for scans,” Knights coach Adam O’Brien said.
“He’s tough. He doesn’t come off for just about anything. You’ve got to drag him off the field with a tow truck normally, so it’s not a good sign.”
He will undergo scans in coming days to determine the full extent of the injury.
The injury scare will thrust Broncos fullback Reece Walsh into consideration for Maroons coach Billy Slater ahead of selecting his Origin III squad on Monday.
Ponga was wearing a moon boot on his left foot after the match. The outstanding fullback suffered a lisfranc injury last season on his opposite foot which saw him undergo surgery and miss 11-weeks of football.
