Anthony Seibold will return to coaching rugby league on Thursday, fronting for day one of his new consultancy role at the Newcastle Knights.

Head coach Adam O’Brien confirmed he’ll reunite with Seibold after the pair first came to work together under Craig Bellamy as Storm assistants eight years ago.

They’ve since remained good friends and after seeing Seibold’s first grade coaching career unravel at the Broncos over the last two seasons, he didn’t hesitate at the prospect of linking up with him again.

“I don’t want to see anyone go through that, and to be honest you don’t have to be that close to feel for him. Knowing him, I knew he’d come through the other side,” O’Brien said.

The club confirmed Seibold will commute from Sydney and work three to four days a week as a ‘contracted consultant, not full-time’, with no commitment beyond this season.

“Seibs is one of the best I’ve worked with,” O’Brien said. “His planning and organisational skills are second to none, he understands there’s so much more involved in the art of coaching and his connection from the meeting room to the training paddock is phenomenal.

“Our staff and players will benefit from having Seibs involved, he will help coach our young coaches.”

Following the off-season departure of David Furner to Belmore, those young coaches Seibold will work closely with include Willie Peters, Eric Smith, Rory Kostjasyn and another new face in Andrew Ryan, who will work across development and pathways.

The entire coaching, performance and medical team from the club went away last week on a four day planning trip to gear up for an “exciting” 2021 season after the Knights finished this year in disappointing fashion.

O’Brien says he’s feeling ‘energised and very keen to start’ as players make a staggered return to pre-season training over the coming weeks.

“I’ve missed the playing group, I’m excited by the list and it’s capability heading into the new season.”
