JAMES Roberts is set to play through his niggling injuries and take on St George Illawarra, with Darius Boyd hailing his ability to perform in spite of his ailments.
Roberts is under an injury cloud heading into Thursday’s clash with the Dragons at Suncorp Stadium after struggling with a hip complaint at Brisbane training this morning.
Roberts had very limited involvement in the session and was restricted during running drills.
The Broncos have just one more training session this week and Roberts will have to face a fitness test to take his place against St George Illawarra.
The Broncos are hopeful he should be right to face the Dragons.
Boyd said Roberts had already proven he had the toughness to play through pain.
In several games this year Roberts has struggled with leg complaints.
“He’s got a few niggling injuries at the moment. All the staff here have done a great job with him,” Boyd said.
“As long as he keeps getting out on the field and putting in the performances he has been we will be happy.”
Origin backrower Matt Gillett got through Monday’s session fine, despite strapping on his knee.
Boyd faces Blues fullback candidate Josh Dugan on Thursday night in a battle between two elite custodians.
“I haven’t seen many of his games but I have heard talk that he’s been playing really well. He always does though. He’s a class player,” Boyd said of Dugan.
“He’s very tough to defend because he has all the attributes. He will be a key guy and we will have to work hard on Thursday night to shut him down.”
Meanwhile, Suncorp Stadium is set for another sell out with tickets flying for the NRL double header next month.
The feast of football on May 14 features Melbourne Storm against the North Queensland Cowboys and the Manly Sea Eagles against the Brisbane Broncos and has now sold more than 43,000 tickets.
