Josh Kerr sat in coach Paul McGregor’s office in tears. The uncapped St George Illawarra prop nervously entered McGregor’s office after being summoned by club management.
Just hours earlier Kerr had been involved in a training accident with key playmaker Cameron McInnes.
“That day Cameron had tried to tackle me and he compound dislocated his finger,” Kerr said.
“My head was falling off already. I walked up to the room and Mary (McGregor) is like ‘take a seat mate’. He was like congratulations … I said ‘Mary if you’re taking the piss I’m going to start punching you’. He was cracking up.
“I was heavy breathing. Wow I was just so lost for words. This was something I’ve thought about very a long time. I had tears in my eyes.”
McGregor had told Kerr he had been picked in the Indigenous All-Stars team as a replacement for Ryan James. The 22-year-old is yet to make his NRL debut having joined the Dragons in 2017 from Melbourne.
Kerr remained in disbelief about his selection a week later.
“It’s honestly a dream come true,” Kerr said as part of a Dragons school visit.
“You think it but it never happens. Not even playing NRL and being called into this is a bit of a shock. At the same time it’s something I’ve wanted to do.
“I’m ready. I’m confident. Something different about playing in the NRL and then your culture. This has blown me out of the water. My old lady was screaming and crying
“I’ve not touched the ground for the whole week.”
While Kerr can’t wait to link up with his indigenous teammates next week he said Dragons teammate McInnes had recovered from the setback.
“It was his ring finger,” Kerr said.
“He did it and walked away. I thought I stood on his foot. His finger was white.
“He is already training. Back doing weights now. He is very tough.”
