St. George-Illawarra centre Zac Lomax is set to cough up $1000 for jumping on former teammate Tyson Frizell as the Dragons celebrated a try in Sunday’s win over the Newcastle Knights.

Midway through the second half, Dragons captain Ben Hunt kicked a grubber to the in-goal that Frizell chased but ultimately failed to ground.

Frizell’s miss opened the door for Dragons five-eighth Jack Bird to pounce on the kick and score his side’s second try.

After the try was scored, Lomax taunted Frizell by jumping on him and before long, a fracas had erupted at the dead ball line.

On Monday morning, the match review committee charged Lomax with contrary conduct for his behaviour and proposed a $1000 fine. If Lomax unsuccessfully pleads his case at the judiciary, he’ll be forced to pay $1,500.

The incident attracted widespread criticism.

“That’s ordinary from Zac Lomax,” Fox League’s Andrew Voss said in commentary.

“Zac Lomax has gone in and hopped on the back of Tyson Frizell and then Tyson has thrown Zac Lomax down.

“Zac Lomax you are kidding yourself … you deserve that and more.”

Panthers legend Greg Alexander added: “He might’ve been a teammate but you’re not doing that in the heat of battle.”

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin said he would speak to Lomax about the incident.

“It’s something that wasn’t needed,” said Griffin.

“Zac’s just got to let his footy do the talking,” agreed Hunt.

“We know he’s got a lot of talent. He can do some great things for us. He just needs to keep playing footy.”

After the game, Lomax revealed his motivation for the move.

“I just thought whatever I can do to get him off his game. He’s so hard to handle,” he told Fox League.

“You’ve seen how damaging he is. He’s been missed here at the Dragons. It’s all friendly banter.”

The win was the Dragons’ second of the season and will ease the pressure on Griffin, at least temporarily.

The side has won just two of its last 14 matches and must bank wins against the Tigers and Titans in the coming month to get its season back on track.
