State of Origin second rower Liam Martin has revealed the horrific online abuse he received in the wake of the Blues’ narrow 26-24 loss to Queensland on Wednesday night.
Martin took to social media to share one message in particular where he was targeted with disgusting abuse, much of which news.com.au has chosen not to publish.
In the message, sent to him 30 minutes after the game, some of the nicer comments declared Martin to be “ugly” a “mutt” and wished for him to “lose your position in the NRL.”
It was a fast and promising start to Game 2 for the Blues backed early by Martin, who forced an error and got into the ear of opponent Tino Fa’asuamaleaui.
But the Panthers star struggled to keep the advantage as the game continued and he finished with just 41 metres from seven runs and coughed up an error and missed tackle.
That was apparently enough for one Instagram user to send some disgraceful words his way.
“You’re the biggest grub to ever hit New South Wales. You look like you don’t wash your hair,” the commenter wrote.
“Matter of fact. I’ve seen 13-year-old Samoan kids run harder than you. You (sic) are disgrace to rugby league And should never ever touch the football again.
“Lose your position in the NRL thanks a lot you ugly human 26-24 couldn’t get there in the end suck s**t.”
Martin took to social media to out the user on Instagram stories with a simple caption, “don’t be like Beau.”
He wasn’t the only player targeted from last night’s loss.
Despite the adjusted privacy settings to limit comments on his Instagram page, Blues teammate Zac Lomax was also on the receiving end of some ugly words online.
The winger has copped widespread criticism for his goal kicking in Wednesday night’s tight two-point affair. Lomax only managed just two out of five successful conversion kicks which were the difference in a game where NSW scored more tries than the opponent.
It also comes less than two weeks after a man was charged in Newcastle for allegedly sending death threats and abusive messages to Knights player James Schiller.
Schiller’s mixed performance in his side’s 26-22 golden point victory over the Sea Eagles prompted the online threats before police made the arrest following the ordeal.
“Count your days c--- I will end your f---ing life,” the private message to Schiller read.
“Doesn’t make up for it even though you won … “Five errors, two penalties, 1 six again and partridge in a pear tree. I hope Dane (Gagai) jams his c--- down your throat and you choke and die.”
