‘Blaize of Glory’: Panthers confirm signing of Blaize Talagi for the next three seasons

The Panthers look to have found Jarome Luai’s long-term replacement with the premiers signing one of the hottest young talents in rugby league.

The worst kept secret in rugby league is finally official with the Panthers confirming that Blaize Talagi will join the club on a three-year deal and could partner Nathan Cleary in the halves when Jarome Luai leaves at the end of the season.

Talagi’s future had been one of the biggest stories of the year, with the Eels desperate to keep the talented teenager who has scored 11 tries in 16 games including one against the Panthers last week.

Parramatta fans were heartbroken when the club announced that the 19-year-old wouldn’t be there next year, with officials making it clear how disappointed they were that he wouldn’t be a part of their future plans under incoming coach Jason Ryles.

“The club made a very strong offer to Blaize, provided a clear path for his football future and consistently made it clear to Blaize and his family that we wanted him to be part of the club long term,” Eels chief executive Jim Sarantinos said on July 31.

“While we are disappointed, particularly given the opportunities provided to Blaize during his time at the club, we wish him all the best.”

It quickly became apparent that he was heading to their fiercest rivals, with Penrith unable to officially announce the deal in case he changed his mind under the NRL’s 10-day cooling off period.

Talagi’s decision to join the three-time defending premiers continues their calculated signing spree which also saw them get Isaiah Papali’i next year.

Luai’s decision to join the Tigers left a gaping hole in the halves, but Talagi is now tipped to win the No.6 jersey, with Casey McLean set to be their left centre after a strong start to his NRL career.

“Penrith Panthers is delighted to announce that Blaize Talagi has signed a three-year deal with the club,” a club statement read.

“The 19-year-old will join Panthers ahead of the 2025 NRL season and remain at the club until at least the end of 2027.

“Having represented NSW Under-16s and Under-18s, Talagi made his NRL debut in Round 3 this season and has gone on to play 15 first grade matches, scoring 11 tries.

“Demonstrating his versatility, the talented young player has excelled at fullback, wing, centre, five-eighth and off the interchange bench.

“Out of respect to his current club, Panthers will not make further comment at this stage.”
