Anthony Milford is hopeful a move away from the NRL limelight can reignite his love for the game, while the door remains ajar for an unlikely return to Red Hill.
Milford last month put pen to paper with Hostplus Cup side Souths Logan Magpies, the club where he spent four years playing junior representative footy before his move to Canberra.
“A bit less pressure, and to just enjoy my footy again,” Milford said of why he was drawn to Souths.
The move came after the Dolphins decided not to renew Milford’s contract heading into 2025.
The playmaker made 13 appearances with the club across his two seasons, and figured regularly for feeder club the Central Queensland Capras.
In total, Milford’s career has spanned over 200 NRL games and 14 Tests for Samoa.
Souths Logan are a feeder club for the Brisbane Broncos, where Milford enjoyed the most successful stint of his four-club career across seven seasons, which leaves the chance of a return to Red Hill on the cards for the 30-year-old.
Should injuries strike down the Broncos playmaking stocks, which include Adam Reynolds, Coby Black, Jock Madden and Josh Rogers, as well as being buoyed by the return of Ben Hunt, Milford could be called upon in a time of need.
He was nonplussed about the prospect of a Broncos return.
“It is what it is, we’ll see what happens, whatever happens, happens,” he said.
Milford is excited to reunite with Magpies coach and former tri-code star Karmichael Hunt, whom he previously crossed paths with at the Broncos.
“I worked with Karmichael when he came back to the Broncos, I watched him when I was younger,” Milford said.
“It’s pretty cool to be under him again, I’m looking forward and excited to working with him and seeing what we can do with the team.”
Milford is also set to begin a transition into coaching and will work with 13 to 16 year olds in the Magpies player development program.
He was one of a number of former Broncos who competed for Alex Glenn’s Legacy team in the Nines Premier League on the Gold Coast over the weekend.
“I’ll definitely put my hand up to play again next year,” Milford said of the event.
“It’s a great concept to get behind, and seeing all the familiar faces around the game, connecting with other families, nothing better.”
