South Whyalla Football Club has called Brendan Fevola’s one-off appearance for the club “nothing short of outstanding”, as vision circulates of the former AFL great involved in a melee with three opposition players.
Fevola addressed his appearance for South Whyalla on his radio show on Monday, saying he’d “never heard of Whyalla before”.
“I only kicked two (goals), but I kicked like seven points,” he told co-hosts Fifi Box and Nick Cody.
“Got in a punch-on, which was good. Got sent off, it was awesome, best day ever.”
Fevola went into more detail of his scuffle, saying he was “on”.
“Someone hit me in the back of the head and it was on, bam, bam, bam, UFC style,” he said.
Fevola spent the weekend in the steel city, lacing up the boots in a special appearance for South Whyalla on Saturday against cross-town rivals Central Whyalla at Memorial Oval.
The former Carlton and Brisbane great booted two goals before getting involved in an ugly incident in the fourth quarter, that saw him receive a yellow card and spend ten minutes on the sideline after wrestling with three Centrals players.
The South Whyalla management committee were full of praise for Fevola after his appearance for the club, describing it as a “real highlight for our club and the Whyalla community”.
As part of his visit to Whyalla, Fevola hosted a “Sportsman’s Night” following Saturday’s game.
“The buzz around the ground was incredible, and Brendan didn’t disappoint — his presence lifted not only the standard of the game but also the spirits of everyone involved,” a committee spokesperson said.
“With South Whyalla fielding a relatively young side this season, having someone of Brendan’s experience and stature on the field was invaluable.”
“He took time with the players, offered guidance, and his leadership helped build confidence among the young Demons.”
The committee spokesperson said the Sportsman’s Night was equally a great success “with a full house enjoying a great evening of stories, laughs, and community connection”.
“Events like these go a long way in boosting club culture and morale, and Brendan played a huge part in that,” they said.
